What is a commercial chaff cutter machine?

A chaff cutter chops green fodder, dry straw and hay into short pieces so cattle and horses can eat and digest it easily. The operator pushes fodder along a chute, or lays it on a conveyor, into two corrugated feed rolls that grip and press it. Knives on a spinning flywheel, or a rotating cutting cylinder, shear the fodder against a fixed blade. Feed roll diameter and speed, cutter head speed and knife count set the length of cut. The cut feed drops below the machine, is thrown forward or is blown up a pipe. An electric motor or a tractor power take-off drives it, and commercial units work at dairy farms, shelters and fodder units.

This page covers motor-driven and tractor-driven chaff cutters for commercial dairy farms, animal shelters and fodder units; hand-operated and home-use models are not covered.

How diipl verifies chaff cutter machine manufacturers

diipl checks every chaff cutter machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For chaff cutter machines, the capacity audit also covers:

  • An idle run of the cutter head at the stated speed, watching for oscillation, knocking, belt slip, rough shafts and a rise in bearing temperature
  • A loaded run on real fodder, with output per hour and power drawn written down and compared with the nameplate figures
  • A cut-length check: set the length of cut, collect a sample and measure how far the pieces vary, and see that feed roll clearance and the gap between fixed and rotating blades can be adjusted
  • Guards and fittings as supplied: flywheel locking pin on its chain, front guard on each knife, chute cover or warning roller, blade cover, conveyor cover on conveyor-fed machines, covers on belts and gears, and the PTO shaft guard on tractor models
  • Foundry and fabrication quality: cast parts free of cracks and porosity, welds not porous, bearings enclosed with a lubrication point, and the nameplate, danger plate and operator manual present

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of chaff cutter machines we cover

Indian chaff cutter machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Chute-fed flywheel chaff cutterDairy farms and animal shelters that feed fodder by hand down a chute.
Conveyor-fed chaff cutterLarger farms and fodder units that feed bundled fodder continuously and want the feeder kept away from the knives.
Blower (blow-up) chaff cutterFarms and fodder units that need the cut feed lifted away from the machine.
Cylinder-type chaff cutterBuyers who name a cylinder cutter head in their purchase specification.
Tractor PTO-driven chaff cutterFarms and fodder units that already run a tractor, or have no mains supply at the fodder shed.

Chute-fed flywheel chaff cutter

The operator pushes fodder down a chute into two feed rolls, and knives mounted on a spinning flywheel shear it against a fixed blade. The Indian specification asks for a chute at least 900 mm long and for an arrangement to clutch or declutch the drive. This layout suits feeding by hand down the chute, with a pushing device used for the fodder and hands kept away from the feed rolls.

Conveyor-fed chaff cutter

Fodder rides a conveyor into the corrugated feed rolls, so bundles are laid on instead of pushed down a chute by hand. The Indian standards ask for a conveyor at least 1200 mm long, covered near the feed rolls. For conveyor-fed machines of 15 kW or more the safety standard recommends a feed reversing mechanism that cuts or reverses the drive if an operator's hand is caught.

Blower (blow-up) chaff cutter

A centrifugal blower lifts the cut fodder up a pipe instead of letting it fall below the machine. The specification asks for a way to control the air blast, and where a blower is fitted the tested blowing efficiency must be not less than 99 percent. Choose it when the cut feed has to be carried up and away from the machine.

Cylinder-type chaff cutter

A rotating cutting cylinder, also called a reel, does the cutting in place of knives on a flywheel. The specification allows a spring-mounted reel and asks for a way to adjust the height of the reel against the throat and for lubrication at both ends of the reel shaft. Ask each maker how the reel is adjusted, sharpened and replaced.

Tractor PTO-driven chaff cutter

A tractor power take-off shaft turns the cutter head, so the machine needs no electrical supply to run. The Indian safety standard asks for a guard on the PTO shaft of PTO-driven chaff cutters, made of mild steel sheet at least 1.6 mm thick. Check tractor power, PTO speed and the way the machine couples to the tractor against the maker's data sheet.

What to specify when buying a chaff cutter machine

A clear chaff cutter machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Rated input capacity (kg per hour) and its test basisMakers quote output on different fodder and moisture. The Indian test code corrects output to zero percent moisture and 20 mm length of cut, so ask for the figure on that basis or the exact test conditions.
Drive and power supply: electric motor or tractor PTOState the drive you will use. For a motor, give the supply phase and voltage you have. For a PTO model, give tractor power, PTO speed and how the machine couples to the tractor, and get each confirmed in writing.
Motor rating against the claimed capacity and power drawnThe Indian test code records power drawn with no load and under load, and the quantity cut per unit of energy. Compare each maker's motor rating with its claimed capacity and ask for those power figures.
Range of cut lengths and how the length is setSilage guidance says forage should be chopped into pieces no longer than 2 cm. Ask what range of cut lengths the machine can set and how the setting is changed between fodder types.
Evenness of cutIn the Indian specification the variation in length of cut must be not more than 10 percent, measured by the method of the test code. Ask for the maker's measured variation on fodder like yours.
Cutter head: flywheel with knives, or cylinderThe specification asks for a way to change knife inclination to avoid feed interference. Ask how the knives or reel come off, how the gap to the fixed blade is set and which tools the job needs.
Discharge: let-fall, throw-away or blow-upLet-fall drops the cut feed below the machine, throw-away sends it forward and blow-up lifts it through a pipe. For a blower, ask for tested blowing efficiency, which the specification sets at not less than 99 percent.
Feeding system: chute or conveyor sizeBoth Indian standards call for a chute at least 900 mm long and a conveyor at least 1200 mm long. The safety standard recommends a chute height of 750 mm to 1100 mm. Check the machine against these.
Feed rolls, roll clearance and roll directionThe specification asks for two feed rolls on ball bearings, adjustable roll clearance and a way to change the direction of rotation of the rolls. Ask to see the clearance adjustment and the reverse working.
Blade and cast iron materialCast iron parts are specified at 160 to 220 HB, and blade material and hardness follow IS 1511. Ask for the blade material, hardness test results and a spare knife set.
Guards and safety fittingsFor chute-fed machines the safety standard asks for a flywheel locking pin on a chain, a front guard on each knife, a chute cover or warning roller and a blade cover, plus mild steel guards of at least 1.6 mm.
Transmission, bearings and clutchThe safety standard asks for covers on the worm and pinion gears, completely enclosed bearings with a lubrication point, and guards on all moving parts. Check each on the machine, and ask how the drive is declutched.
Stand or wheels, weight and packed sizeThe specification requires a stand or wheels. For a machine that moves between sheds, ask for the wheel size, packed weight and packed size, and how the machine is anchored while it works.
Nameplate, manual and warningsEach machine should carry maker, model, code and batch number, power rating in kW, rated input capacity and recommended rpm, plus a danger plate, a cautionary notice and an operator manual in a language operators read.

Your opportunity

Indian chaff cutter machine makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying chaff cutter machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a chaff cutter machine in India

  • Get a GST invoice with the model, rated capacity, motor or PTO rating and serial number written on it, and have the warranty in writing.
  • Prepare a level, firm base with room for the feed chute, the discharge side and a trolley or bin, and clear access to the flywheel for locking and knife work.
  • Match the motor to your single-phase or three-phase supply and fit a starter, overload protection and proper earthing. For a tractor model, check tractor power, PTO speed and coupling against the data sheet.
  • Have the maker install the machine, run it under load on your own fodder and train every operator to use the pushing device, lock the flywheel after work, make adjustments only with the drive stopped and keep fire away from dry fodder.
  • Get a spares list for knives, shear plate, feed rolls, belts and bearings, and agree who sharpens or replaces knives and how fast.
  • Check the delivery on arrival: cast parts free of cracks, guards and locking pin present, and the operator manual and warning labels in a language your operators read.

Buying from Indian chaff cutter machine exporters

  • Agree the Incoterm in writing, including who arranges freight and insurance. The Indian standards list the flywheel as cast iron, so ask for packed weight and size per unit before you book transport.
  • Tell the maker your mains voltage, frequency and phase so the motor, starter and wiring are built for them. For a tractor model, give the PTO speed and coupling type of your tractor.
  • Ask for the commercial invoice, packing list and, where your customs ask for it, the Certificate of Origin, plus an operator manual in your operators' language with the danger plate and cautionary notice in that language.
  • If the machine goes to the European Union, ask the maker for the EU declaration of conformity and for proof of how the knives, feed rolls, belt and gear drives and any PTO shaft are guarded.
  • Ask for the output, power draw and cut-length variation measured the way the Indian test code sets out, so you can compare makers on one basis whatever your region.
  • Order a first set of knives, belts and feed-roll parts with the machine, ask for knives and blade cover to be packed so the edges survive transit, and agree remote video support for set-up.

Chaff Cutter Machine: frequently asked questions

Who makes chaff cutters in India?

diipl keeps maker names private. Tell diipl the type you need (chute or conveyor fed, motor or tractor driven) with your daily fodder volume and supply. diipl then puts forward a maker with a verified GSTIN whose factory capacity has been audited, checks the maker's Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and the approvals your market needs, and sets up a direct meeting. For a chaff cutter the audit covers an idle run, a loaded run on real fodder and a check that the flywheel locking pin and knife guards are fitted.

What should I specify when buying a commercial chaff cutter?

Give the drive (electric motor or tractor power take-off), the rated input capacity in kg per hour on a stated test basis, the motor rating in kW, the feeding system (chute or conveyor), the discharge (let-fall, throw-away or blower) and the range of cut lengths. Ask for the guards and flywheel locking pin that the Indian safety standard lists, and for a test run on your own fodder before dispatch.

Which standards or certifications apply to chaff cutters?

Four Indian Standards apply: IS 11459 (specification for power-operated chaff cutters), IS 15542 (safety requirements), IS 7897 (test code) and IS 1511 (blades for manually-operated chaff cutters, which the first two name for blade material and hardness). IS 15542 says a chaff cutter may carry the Standard Mark, used under a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Check the current edition before you quote one in an order.

What is the HSN code for chaff cutter machines?

Chaff Cutter Machines are classified under ITC-HS 84361000 (machinery for preparing animal feeding stuffs), within HS subheading 843610. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export chaff cutters?

Yes. Indian makers can sell chaff cutters to buyers abroad, and diipl confirms the maker's Importer Exporter Code (IEC) before it arranges a meeting. Agree the motor build for your voltage, frequency and phase, the guards fitted before dispatch and an operator manual in a language your operators read. For the European Union, the CE mark may be applied only after testing and the conformity assessment, so ask which guard standards the design follows.

Which industries buy chaff cutters?

Dairy farms chop green fodder, silage crops and straw for dairy animals and mixed rations. The Animal Welfare Board of India's animal shelter guideline lists purchase of a motor operated chaff cutter as a shelter component and names panjrapoles among eligible bodies, so shelters and panjrapoles are buyers. Silage and fodder conservation units, horse and cattle stables and feed units that blend chopped fodder into rations also buy them.

I manufacture chaff cutters. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl first works out which buyer groups and regions need your kind of chaff cutter, for example dairy farms, shelters and silage units, and then contacts them directly. Each buyer is vetted on four points before an introduction: a genuine requirement, available funds, the power to sign and a firm buying date. diipl never publishes your name or contact details. Keep your test results in the IS 7897 format, a filled specification sheet and photographs of your guards ready for the meeting.

What cut length should I set when chopping fodder for silage?

Silage guidance says forage should be chopped into pieces no longer than 2 cm so it packs well and holds less air. Pick a chaff cutter whose length of cut can be set to suit, check a sample after each change, and keep the knives sharp and the gap to the fixed blade correctly set so the cut stays even.

Which safety features should a power chaff cutter have?

For chute-fed machines the Indian safety standard asks for a flywheel locking pin on a chain, a front guard on each knife, a chute cover or warning roller and a blade cover. It asks for guards of at least 1.6 mm mild steel on all moving parts, including any PTO shaft, a danger plate near the blades, a cautionary notice and an operator manual. Its foreword cites reports of farm workers losing limbs in power chaff cutters.

How do I check the rated output of a chaff cutter before buying?

Ask for a loaded run on fodder like yours and write down output per hour and power drawn against the nameplate. The Indian test code runs a short test of not less than 1 hour, with fodder moisture ideally 75 to 85 percent, then a long run of at least 20 hours made up of runs of at least 5 hours. Output is corrected to zero percent moisture and 20 mm cut length so makers can be compared.

Should I choose a tractor-driven chaff cutter or an electric one?

A tractor-driven model turns its cutter head from the tractor power take-off, so it needs no electrical supply but ties up a tractor while it runs, and the safety standard asks for a guard on its PTO shaft. An electric model needs a suitable supply, a starter and earthing, and suits a fixed shed. Match the maker's data sheet to your tractor power and PTO speed, or to your supply.
