What is a commercial combine harvester?

A combine harvester cuts the standing crop, threshes the grain out of it and cleans the grain in one pass. A header with a cutter bar and reel gathers the crop and feeds a threshing drum and concave. Straw walkers carry the straw out of the machine, while sieves and a fan clean the grain, which goes to a grain tank and leaves through an unloading auger. Wheel and track models carry their own engine, and tractor-mounted models use a tractor as the base. A sugarcane harvester works on a different crop: a topper cuts off the leafy top, a base cutter cuts the stalk near the ground, and chopper models cut the stalk into short billets.

This page covers commercial combine harvesters and sugarcane harvesters for farms, custom-hire operators, sugar mills and dealers; walk-behind reapers and hobby-scale machines are not covered.

How diipl verifies combine harvester manufacturers

diipl checks every combine harvester manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For combine harvesters, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A no-load run of the engine, threshing drum, cleaning fan and header at working speed, watching for knocking, belt slip, vibration and rising heat
  • Repeated lifting and lowering of the header on the hydraulic system with the oil warm, looking for leaks and uneven movement
  • The threshing unit as built: drum balance, the range of concave and sieve adjustment, and the finish of welds on the drum housing and grain tank
  • Safety fittings as supplied: guards on belt and chain drives and pulleys, slip clutches, grain tank cover, spark arrester, stone trap, rear view mirror, fire extinguisher, lights and control labels
  • Paperwork on the shop floor: the government test report for the model, the engine's emission papers and, for paddy machines, the fitting drawings for a Super SMS unit

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of combine harvesters we cover

Indian combine harvester manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Self-propelled wheel-type combine harvesterCustom-hire operators and large farms harvesting wheat and paddy.
Self-propelled track-type combine harvesterPaddy growers and custom-hire operators who harvest paddy.
Compact (mini) combine harvesterSmall farms and the operators who harvest for them.
Tractor-mounted combine harvesterBuyers who want a tractor as the base machine for harvesting.
Whole-stalk sugarcane harvesterSugar mills and the contractors who run harvesters for them.
Chopper sugarcane harvesterSugar mills and the contractors who run harvesters for them.

Self-propelled wheel-type combine harvester

The machine has its own engine and chassis and runs on wheels. India's government testing institute tests it as a separate type, and the acceptance table in IS 15806 lists wheat and paddy for wheel-type machines. Compare makers on rate of work, grain loss, fuel use, safety fittings and the header offered for each crop you cut.

Self-propelled track-type combine harvester

The machine has its own engine and runs on tracks in place of wheels. India's government testing institute tests it as a separate type, and the acceptance table in IS 15806 lists paddy for track-type machines. If you also cut other crops, ask the maker to name them in writing and to show test results on each.

Compact (mini) combine harvester

A tractor maker's buying guide recommends compact or mini combine harvesters for small farms of about 1 to 5 hectares and says they handle rice and wheat. Check engine power, header width, grain tank size and road access to your plots against the size of the fields you serve.

Tractor-mounted combine harvester

India's government testing institute lists tractor-mounted and tractor combine harvesters as separate types from self-propelled machines. For this type a tractor supplies the engine and chassis, so ask the maker which tractors it approves and for a test report on the exact combination.

Whole-stalk sugarcane harvester

A whole-stalk sugarcane harvester has a topper that cuts off the leafy top and drops it to the side of the row, and a base cutter that cuts the stalk close to the ground. A review paper gives about 30 mm above ground for the base cut, and says rotating blades are used more often than a cutter bar on thick stalks such as sugarcane.

Chopper sugarcane harvester

A chopper sugarcane harvester has a topper and a base cutter, then feeding rollers push the stalk into a chopper that cuts it into short pieces called billets. An airflow extractor lifts leafy trash away from the billets. Green cane harvesting, where the leaves are not burnt off before cutting, is harder on mechanical harvesters, so ask how the extractor copes with the extra trash.

What to specify when buying a combine harvester

A clear combine harvester specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Crops you cut and the header for eachA tractor maker's guide says cereals need specialised cutting headers, straw walkers and threshing units, while row crops such as maize, sorghum and soybeans need a corn header. List every crop and its header in the order.
Wheel or track undercarriageThe same guide says tracked systems spread the machine's weight better than tyres on wet or soft soil and reduce soil compaction. Match the choice to the state of your fields at harvest, and ask for tests on your crop.
Maize header type: snap roll or cutter barA 2024 study says most Indian maize combines use a snap roll header, which depends on row spacing and causes headland losses. Testing a new light-weight cutter bar header, it measured total losses of 15.06 percent for snap roll and 10.85 percent for cutter bar.
Cutting width, effective width and transport sizeOne maker's crawler paddy model lists a 2120 mm cutter bar with 2110 mm of effective cutting width and a transport width of 2710 mm. Ask every maker for all three figures, so models compare fairly.
Engine power, speed and emission papersThe acceptance table in IS 15806 asks the maker to declare maximum power and fuel use, and allows power within 5 percent of the declared value on test. Ask for the declared figures, the test result and the engine's emission papers.
Threshing drum, concave and sieve settingsOne maker lists a threshing drum of 495 mm diameter turning at 825 rpm. Ask each maker for drum size and speed and for the adjustment range of the concave and sieves.
Grain loss, breakage and cleaning limitsIS 15806 clause 4.1, as shown in the testing institute's presentation, lists losses of at most 3 percent for wheat and 4 percent for paddy, threshing efficiency of at least 98 percent, cleaning efficiency of at least 96 percent and grain breakage of at most 2.5 percent. Check the amendment.
Rate of work and fuel useThe institute's field test records area covered per hour, fuel per hectare, net grain output, straw output and combine capacity in tonnes per hour. Ask for the same figures on your crop, not a brochure number.
Grain tank size and unloadingThe guide says a larger grain tank allows longer continuous work, with tanks of 1,000 to 2,000 litres suiting frequent unloading and tanks of 4,000 litres and more suiting large farms. Match tank and auger to your trolley and field size.
Straw management: Super SMS fitted or a mounting planThe Super SMS is fitted behind the straw walkers and chops straw with flail blades on a rotating shaft. ICAR notes its rotor needs dynamic balancing and firm support from the combine chassis, so ask how the maker builds both.
Safety fittings and noiseIS 15806 asks for guards on drives, a grain tank cover, stone trap, rear view mirror, fire extinguisher and a cutting platform slip clutch. Noise limits are 88 dB(A) at a bystander and 98 dB(A) at the operator's ear, both set by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
Knife sections, guards and blade materialBIS has specifications for the guards and the knife sections used on harvesting machines: IS 6024:2025 and IS 6025:2024. Ask for the maker's material and hardness test results, and for a spare knife set.
Sugarcane harvester: row spacing, base cutter and topperA review says large imported harvesters were designed for rows about 1.5 m apart, and that growers adopt rows of 120 to 150 cm for machine harvest. Ask the maker for the row spacing, base cutter blade type and topper height range.
Test report, breakdown record and approvalsAsk for the government testing institute's report for the exact model. The acceptance table allows no critical breakdown and no more than five major and minor breakdowns in total, and the institute also tests combines under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for combine harvesters

Combine harvesters are classified under ITC-HS 84335100 (combine harvester-threshers), within HS subheading 843351 (combine harvester-threshers). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

Some machines on this page use a different line:

  • 84335900 (other, within subheading 843359: harvesting machinery; n.e.c. in heading no. 8433) when the machine is a sugarcane harvester that cuts and gathers standing cane and does not thresh.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity

Indian combine harvester makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying combine harvesters right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a combine harvester in India

  • Ask the maker for a GST invoice that shows the model, serial number, engine number and header width, and for the warranty in writing. Ask for the government test report and the approval papers for the exact model.
  • Plan the road move. A combine is wide, so ask the maker how the header is folded or removed for transport, and get loading, lashing and refitting instructions in writing before dispatch.
  • Have the maker commission the machine in your own field and train every operator on header height, drum and concave settings, sieve and fan adjustment, daily greasing and clearing blockages with the engine stopped. The Indian code of practice for combines covers installation, operation and preventive maintenance.
  • Agree the wear parts list and who supplies it: knife sections, guards, belts, chains, sieves, bearings and concave bars. Ask where the service engineers are based and how fast they reach your field in the harvest season.
  • For paddy, check your district's current order on Super SMS. According to news reports, Haryana's agriculture department and the Ludhiana district administration have both required a working unit on combines at paddy harvest, so ask whether the machine ships with one or has a mounting plan.
  • Ask for the engine's emission approval. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules carry emission norms for agricultural machinery, which the Ministry names as including combine harvesters, so the maker should show the papers for the engine fitted.

Buying from Indian combine harvester exporters

  • Settle the Incoterm in writing and say who pays for sea freight and insurance. Ask for the packed length, width, height and weight of each unit and of the header, and for the parts that fold or come off for the voyage.
  • Tell the maker your crops, the header you need and your local row spacing. For sugarcane, give the row spacing and cane height of your fields so the machine is set for them.
  • For the European Union, ask for the declaration of conformity, the guard drawings and the engine's emission type-approval papers. The harmonised safety standard that covers combine harvesters also names forage, cotton and sugar cane harvesters.
  • Collect the invoice, packing list and a Certificate of Origin if your customs require one. Add the Indian government test report for the model, so your engineers can read measured losses, fuel use and noise.
  • Ask which emission standard the fitted engine meets and whether your market accepts it. The European Union, for one, requires approval of the engine itself before it can be placed on the market.
  • Order a first set of knife sections, guards, belts, chains and sieves with the machine, and fix a video-call routine for set-up. Ask for the operator's manual and safety labels in your operators' language.

Standards and certifications for combine harvesters

Combine Harvesters for each market must meet that market's rules. diipl confirms the certifications your market needs before any meeting. Each requirement below links to its official source.

Combine Harvester: frequently asked questions

Who makes combine harvesters in India?

Maker names are not listed on diipl. Tell diipl your crop, field type and the area you must cover in a season. diipl proposes a maker whose GSTIN is verified and whose works have been audited for capacity, then confirms its Importer Exporter Code and the approvals the importing region asks for before the meeting is fixed. For a combine, the audit includes a no-load run of the engine, drum and header, and a look at the guards, slip clutches and the model's test report.

Which header, cutting width and engine power should I ask for?

Name your crops first, since cereals need cutting headers and row crops such as maize need a corn header. A tractor maker's guide then suggests engines of 40 to 60 HP for farms of 1 to 5 hectares, 60 to 120 HP for medium farms and 120 to 250 HP for large farms, with grain tanks from 1,000 litres to over 4,000 litres. Ask for declared power, its test result and the test report for the exact model.

Which standards or certifications apply to combine harvesters?

Indian Standards cover the machine: IS 8122 (Part 2):2026 is the performance test code, IS 15806:2018 gives recommendations on selected performance and other characteristics, and IS 17626:2021 gives test methods for self-propelled sugarcane harvesters. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules carry emission norms for agricultural machinery. Check the current amendment before you quote any of them.

What is the HSN code for combine harvesters?

Combine Harvesters are classified under ITC-HS 84335100 (combine harvester-threshers), within HS subheading 843351. Some related machines use a different line: 84335900 when the machine is a sugarcane harvester that cuts and gathers standing cane and does not thresh. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export combine harvesters?

Yes. A maker with an Importer Exporter Code can export, and diipl checks the code before a meeting. Agree the crops, header and engine emission rules of the importing region first. For the European Union, the engine itself must hold type-approval under the non-road machinery emissions regulation before it can be placed on the market, so ask for those papers.

Which industries buy combine harvesters?

Custom hire is one route by which combines reach farmers. An ICAR case study of combine custom-hire units in north-western India (published 2004, covering 2001 to 2002) says combines were introduced because harvest labour was short and the weather uncertain, and are being adopted by all categories of farmers. Owners reported that the business had become highly competitive. Today's buyers also include dealers and, for cane machines, sugar mills and the contractors who run harvesters for them.

I manufacture combine harvesters. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl works out which farm groups and regions need your machine type, such as custom-hire operators and large grain farms, and reaches them directly. Each buyer is screened for a real harvest need, funds in place, a decision-maker at the table and a season to buy in. Your name and contacts stay private. Bring the government test report for your model, a filled specification sheet, Super SMS drawings and photos of your guards.

What is a Super SMS and does my combine need one?

Super SMS is the straw management attachment developed by Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. It is fitted behind the straw walkers at the rear of the combine, and flail blades on a rotating shaft chop the straw coming off the walkers. It helps seeders work in combine-harvested paddy fields. Orders can differ by state and district, so ask your agriculture department whether a working unit is required for paddy.

Should I choose a wheel-type or track-type combine harvester?

Start from the crop and the state of your fields at harvest. The acceptance table in IS 15806 lists wheat and paddy for wheel-type machines and paddy for track-type machines. If your fields stay wet or soft, ask to see a track model working in similar soil, and ask each maker for test results on your crop.

How much grain loss is acceptable from a combine harvester?

The acceptance table the testing institute uses (IS 15806, clause 4.1) lists average processing losses of at most 3 percent for wheat and 4 percent for paddy, threshing efficiency of at least 98 percent, cleaning efficiency of at least 96 percent and grain breakage of at most 2.5 percent. Non-collectable losses are limited to 2.5 percent for wheat, paddy and gram and 4 percent for soybean. Check the current amendment.

What field conditions does a sugarcane harvester need?

Row spacing matters most. A review reports that large imported harvesters were designed for rows about 1.5 m apart, that traditional practice used closer rows of 60 to 90 cm where cane was cut by hand, and that growers adopted rows of 120 to 150 cm to suit machines. Ask the maker which row spacing and cane height the machine is built for.
