What is a commercial hydraulic press?
A hydraulic press uses a hydraulic cylinder to make a large pressing force. A pump builds oil pressure, and the pressure pushes a ram against the workpiece or the tooling. The full press force is available along the whole stroke, and stroke, speed and final pressure can be adjusted. Factories use hydraulic presses for forming, deep drawing, punching, coining and straightening, and for pressing bearings and bushings in and out. A C-frame press is open on three sides. A closed column frame, often called H-frame, carries higher forces. Presses are fitted with safeguards for the operator, such as guards and light curtains.
This page covers commercial and industrial hydraulic presses for metal forming and pressing; household and hobby models are not covered.
How diipl verifies hydraulic press manufacturers
diipl checks every hydraulic press manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For hydraulic presses, the capacity audit also covers:
- a loaded test at rated press force on the factory floor, with the pressure gauge reading shown
- frame welding and machining quality, including flatness of the bed and ram face and alignment of the ram to the bed
- a pressure-hold and oil leak test on the cylinder, valves and pipework
- a working test of the fitted safeguards, such as the guards, light curtain and emergency stop, with the stopping time measured
- in-house capacity to fabricate and machine heavy frames and to assemble the hydraulic power pack
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of hydraulic presses we cover
Indian hydraulic press manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| C-frame (single-column) hydraulic press | Sheet metal workshops, small stamping units and assembly shops. |
| H-frame (column or portal) hydraulic press | Forming and deep-drawing shops that run higher force or large tooling. |
| Deep-drawing hydraulic press | Makers of cookware, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, battery casings and pressure vessels. |
C-frame (single-column) hydraulic press
The frame is open on three sides, so the operator loads and unloads from the front and sides. It suits long or odd-shaped parts that stick out sideways, and work such as sheet metal straightening, small stampings and assembly. It is generally used for medium to low tonnage. Choose it when quick loading matters more than very high force. Throat width limits the size of the part.
H-frame (column or portal) hydraulic press
A closed frame with columns around the work area takes higher forces than an open frame and guides the ram more precisely. Makers use the names H-frame, portal, double-column and four-column for these closed frames, so check the layout in the drawing. It suits deep drawing, forming and work with large tools or heavy dies. The clearance between the columns limits the part size.
Deep-drawing hydraulic press
Built to draw sheet metal into cups, shells and tanks. A four-post frame is the standard choice, and a C-frame can also be used. A cushion or blank holder clamps the sheet and controls how the metal flows, so it does not wrinkle or tear. Presses can be vertical, horizontal or multi-station, and most use a PLC to set stroke, pressure, dwell time and ram speed.
What to specify when buying a hydraulic press
A clear hydraulic press specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Press force (tonnage) | Tonnage is the maximum force a press can exert. Size it for your heaviest job, not the most frequent one. One supplier's published range lists C-frame models at 40 t to 200 t, H-frame at 70 t to 300 t. |
| Frame type | A C-frame is open on three sides and easy to load. A closed column frame takes higher forces and guides the ram more precisely. Choose by part size, access and force. |
| Bed (table) size | The bed is the flat, fixed surface that carries the lower bolster or die. Check that it fits your die set with room to load and clamp. |
| Stroke | Stroke is the total distance the ram can travel. It must cover the die opening, part depth and loading room. One published C-frame series offers a 500 millimetre stroke. |
| Daylight (open height) | Daylight is the distance between the bed bolster and the ram bolster with the ram fully retracted, also called open height. Compare it with your die height plus part and loading room. |
| Throat width (C-frame presses) | On a C-frame press, throat clearance runs from the vertical centreline of the bed to the back of the press. It decides the largest part or tool that can sit in the press. |
| Ram speeds (approach, pressing, return) | Ask for approach, pressing and return speeds separately. Fast approach and return shorten cycle time, while the pressing speed must suit the material being formed. |
| Hydraulic circuit, pump and valves | Ask about the pump set, working pressure and valves. A multi-pump or regenerative circuit can raise approach and return speed with little extra motor power, and proportional valves give repeatable pressure. |
| Control system (PLC and HMI) | Most presses use a PLC, often with a touchscreen to set stroke, pressure, dwell time and ram speed. Saved programmes let you repeat the same settings on every run. |
| Die cushion or blank holder, and knockout | For deep drawing, a cushion or blank holder clamps the sheet and controls metal flow so it does not wrinkle or tear. A ram-mounted knockout can punch, coin or hold the shell. |
| Safety guarding and stopping time | Ask which safeguards are fitted, such as guards and light curtains. The hydraulic press standard has annexes on the calculation of minimum distances and the response time of the hydraulic system, so ask for the stopping time. |
| Protection against the ram falling | The hydraulic press standard covers preventing the ram from falling under gravity during maintenance and, on down-stroking presses, during production. Ask what device holds the ram and how it is tested. |
| Workpiece material, thickness and part shape | The press force and tooling needed depend on the material and part size. Give the material, thickness, part shape and draw depth when you ask for an offer. |
| Tooling and accessories in the scope | Ask what is included: punch and die, pressure and support plates, press mandrels, and V-blocks for straightening. Which accessories you need depends on your parts. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for hydraulic presses
Hydraulic presses are classified under ITC-HS 84626100 (hydraulic presses), within HS subheading 846261 (machine-tools; cold metal working presses, hydraulic presses). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity
Indian hydraulic press makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.
A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying hydraulic presses right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Hydraulic Press: frequently asked questions
Who makes hydraulic presses in India?
diipl does not publish manufacturer names. You tell diipl your requirement, and diipl matches a manufacturer that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit. diipl also confirms the manufacturer's IEC and the certifications your market needs, then arranges a direct meeting between you and the manufacturer.
What should I specify when buying a commercial hydraulic press?
State the press force for your heaviest job, the frame type, bed size, stroke and daylight. Add ram speeds, the control system, and safety devices such as guards or a light curtain. For deep drawing, ask for a die cushion or blank holder. Give the material, thickness and part shape so the maker can size the press.
Which standards or certifications apply to hydraulic presses?
In India, BIS has published the IS 17277 series on press safety. Part 3, dated 2021, covers hydraulic presses and is identical to ISO 16092-3:2017. Part 1, dated 2019, gives the general requirements for presses. For the European Union, ask for CE marking, which is placed after testing and a conformity assessment.
What is the HSN code for hydraulic presses?
Hydraulic Presses are classified under ITC-HS 84626100 (hydraulic presses), within HS subheading 846261. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.
Can Indian manufacturers export hydraulic presses?
Yes, if the press meets the rules of the buyer's region. For the European Union, the press needs CE marking after testing and a conformity assessment. Machinery placed on the EU market before 20 January 2027 follows the Machinery Directive, and the Machinery Regulation applies from that date. Agree Incoterms, electrical supply and spares early.
Which industries buy hydraulic presses?
Deep-drawing presses make cookware, propane tanks, fire extinguishers and battery casings. Large horizontal presses draw compressed gas tanks and other pressure vessels. Machine building and metalworking shops also use hydraulic presses for forming, punching, coining, straightening, and for pressing bearings and bushings in and out.
I manufacture hydraulic presses. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl researches which buyer segments and regions need hydraulic presses, then runs outreach to reach them. diipl verifies each buyer's need, budget, authority and timeline before any introduction, and arranges a direct meeting. Your name and contact details are never published.
How do I choose between a C-frame and an H-frame hydraulic press?
A C-frame press is open on three sides, so parts load from the front and sides, and it suits medium to low tonnage. A closed column frame, often called H-frame or portal, takes higher forces and guides the ram more precisely. Choose by your heaviest job, part size and how often tooling changes. Makers use frame names differently, so check the drawing.
What is the difference between a hydraulic press and a mechanical press?
A hydraulic press can give its full rated force at any point in the stroke and suits deep forming. A mechanical press, usually with an eccentric drive, reaches full tonnage only near the bottom of the stroke, and its stroke length is set by the crank. The trade-off is speed: a mechanical press is much faster.
What do daylight and stroke mean on a hydraulic press?
Daylight, also called open height, is the distance between the bed bolster and the ram bolster with the ram fully retracted. Stroke is the total distance the ram can travel. Check both against your die height and part depth. On a C-frame press, throat clearance also limits how large a part can sit in the press.
Does a deep-drawing press need a die cushion?
Drawing shells often needs a reverse force to clamp the material as it is drawn. A cushion or blank holder does this, and its pressure can be adjusted during the draw so the sheet does not wrinkle or tear. A knockout can also punch, coin or hold the shell. Ask the maker which cushion force suits your part.
