What is a commercial press brake machine?

A press brake is a machine that bends sheet metal and plate. The sheet is held between a punch on the upper beam and a die on the table, and the beam presses down to form the bend. A back gauge positions the sheet so the bend falls in the right place. In air bending, the depth of the stroke sets the angle. Hydraulic cylinders move the beam on most machines, and servo-electric and hybrid drives are also made. A simple machine has a basic controller and one back gauge. A CNC machine controls the two cylinders, several back gauge axes and crowning, and stores a program for every part. Workshops use press brakes for cabinets, panels, frames and ducting.

This page covers commercial and industrial press brakes for sheet metal workshops and factories; small bench-top and hobby bending machines are not covered.

How diipl verifies press brake machine manufacturers

diipl checks every press brake machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For press brake machines, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A bending run on the factory floor at rated force along the full bed length, with the angle measured at both ends and the middle of the bend to show that crowning and the beam hold the bend even
  • Fabrication of the side frames and beam, and machining of the table and ram faces, with checks on flatness, squareness and the fit of the tool clamps
  • Assembly of the hydraulic circuit with cylinders, valve block, pump, filters and oil cooling, with a pressure test and leak check, and a check of how the two cylinders are kept in step while the ram moves
  • Build and alignment of the back gauge, with a positioning test of each axis and a repeat test on a trial part
  • Electrical panel and safeguard assembly, with a live test of the light curtain or laser device, the emergency stops, the foot pedal and the guards at the sides and rear

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of press brake machines we cover

Indian press brake machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Hydraulic NC press brakeJob shops and fabricators bending brackets, covers and panels in small and medium batches
Hydraulic CNC press brake (synchronised, multi-axis)Contract fabricators and equipment makers who bend many different parts and change setups often
Hybrid servo-hydraulic press brakeFabricators of medium and heavy structural parts running steady, repeat production
All-electric servo press brakeMakers of small and medium sheet metal parts at lighter tonnage
Tandem press brakeMakers of elevator panels, ship hull panels and bulkheads, construction machinery chassis plates and long electrical panels

Hydraulic NC press brake

A hydraulic press brake with a simple numerical controller for the back gauge position and the bending stroke. One maker's NC range runs from 30 to 300 tons of nominal force with table lengths from 1,600 to 6,000 mm. It uses hydraulic synchronization control, with a single back gauge axis (X) and a single bending axis (Y). Choose it for straightforward bending where a few steps per part are enough.

Hydraulic CNC press brake (synchronised, multi-axis)

The two ram cylinders are controlled separately and kept level using linear scales, a CNC back gauge positions the sheet on several axes, and a motorised crowning system offsets deflection. One maker's synchronised range covers 40 to 600 tons and bed lengths from 1.27 to 6 m, with six axes as standard. Choose it for varied parts, tight angles and frequent changeovers.

Hybrid servo-hydraulic press brake

A servo motor drives the hydraulic pump, so pressure is built only when a bend needs it instead of being held all the time, which one maker says lowers energy use. The same maker's guide says hybrid and conventional hydraulic machines span from 40 tons to more than 1,000 tons. Choose it when you want hydraulic force for medium and heavy sheet in steady production.

All-electric servo press brake

A servo-driven ball screw moves the ram, and the machine has no hydraulic components. One maker's electric model is rated for 40 to 60 tons of bending force, with bending lengths of 1300, 1600 or 2100 mm and four standard axes (Y1, Y2, X, R). The maker describes it as oil-free, with fewer moving parts and lower maintenance. Choose it for smaller parts at lighter tonnage, and check the force limit first.

Tandem press brake

Two press brakes linked by their controls so that they work as one machine and bend a sheet longer than a single bed in one operation. One maker gives a working length of 6 to 8 m or longer, against 3 to 4 m for a single press brake, with synchronized Y-axis control across both machines. Choose it for very long panels and plates.

What to specify when buying a press brake machine

A clear press brake machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Rated bending force and the thickest sheet you will bendForce rises with thickness squared and with bend length. One chart gives about 24.9 tons for 3 mm mild steel over 1 m with a 24 mm die opening. Stainless needs about 1.4 to 1.5 times more.
Bending length and distance between the frame columnsThe longest part sets the bed length, and the gap between the columns limits wide or boxed parts. One maker lists bending lengths from 2210 to 4420 mm with column spacing from 1750 to 3680 mm. Ask for both figures.
Throat depth, stroke and open heightThroat depth limits how far a sheet can sit in the frame, and open height limits box parts. One maker lists throat depths of 350 to 610 mm, strokes of 170 to 610 mm, daylight of 387 to 1,100 mm.
Drive type: hydraulic, hybrid or all-electricHydraulic machines do most of the forming work in fabrication shops. A hybrid drives the pump with a servo motor. Electric machines suit lighter tonnage. Match the drive to your thickest sheet and daily running hours.
How the two cylinders are kept in stepOn a torsion bar machine a mechanical shaft links the cylinders, with no live feedback. A CNC machine reads linear encoders on both sides of the frame and corrects the ram in a closed loop. Ask which is fitted.
Back gauge axes and accuracyThe back gauge positions the sheet for each bend and, on CNC machines, can be programmed to move between bends. One maker lists a standard four-axis back gauge with 0.05 mm positioning accuracy and options from one to six axes.
Crowning systemCrowning compensates for machine deflection so the angle stays even along the bed. Wedges and hydraulic cylinders do this as the load rises. Ask which is fitted, whether the CNC controls it, and for a full-length test bend.
Controller and programmingAsk whether the controller is a basic panel where stroke and back gauge are keyed in, or a CNC touch screen with graphical programming. Check for offline programming on a computer, the screen language and the manuals.
Punch and die toolingTooling decides the radius and the angle. For air bending mild steel, a die opening of about eight times the sheet thickness is the usual starting point. Confirm the tooling style, the clamp type and who supplies extra sets.
Ram speeds on approach, bending and returnFast approach and return save time on every part, while a slow bending speed gives control. One maker's table lists bending speeds of 10 to 25 mm/s and approach speeds of 100 to 220 mm/s across its models.
Angle measurement and springback correctionSheet springs back after the punch lifts. Lasers or sensors can measure the current angle, and the control works out whether a restrike is needed. Ask if this is standard or an extra, and test it on your material.
Operator safeguarding at the point of bendingAsk which guard is fitted. A light curtain protects the front, but side entry is not always guarded, so check the sides and rear. Test the light curtain, emergency stop and guards before first use.
Front sheet supports for long or heavy sheetsLong sheets can sag in front of the machine. Ask for front supports, such as support arms or sheet followers, and check that they suit your longest and heaviest part.
Hydraulic oil, cooling and electrical supplyAsk for the oil grade and tank volume, whether oil cooling is fitted, and the motor power, voltage and phases your site must supply. Confirm them in writing before the foundation and cabling are prepared.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for press brake machines

Press brake machines are classified under ITC-HS 84622300 (numerically controlled press brakes), within HS subheading 846223 (machine-tools; bending, folding, straightening or flattening machines (including presses), for working metal, numerically controlled press brakes). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

Some machines on this page use a different line:

  • 84622900 (other, within subheading 846229: machine-tools; bending, folding, straightening or flattening machines (including press brakes), for working metal, numerically controlled n.e.c. in item 84.62.2) when the press brake or other bending machine for flat metal products has no numerical control and is not a profile forming machine.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity

Indian press brake machine makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying press brake machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a press brake machine in India

  • Check that the GST invoice names the machine and the tax rate, and that the GSTIN printed on it is the maker's own.
  • Put installation and commissioning in the contract: levelling on the foundation shown in the maker's drawing, filling and testing the hydraulic circuit, and trial bends on your own sheet before you sign off the machine.
  • Settle the tooling at the start. Agree which punches and dies come with the machine, the tooling style and clamp, and who supplies extra sets for your next jobs.
  • Prepare the site before delivery: a level floor or foundation to the maker's drawing, the power connection, and a crane or lifting plan, because the beam and frames are long and heavy.
  • Book training for operators and setters on tool selection, back gauge setting, angle correction for springback and the safeguards. Ask for the manual and, on CNC machines, help with the first programs.
  • Agree a spares list for parts that wear or fail, such as seals, hoses, filters, valves, scales and sensors, and ask how quickly a service engineer can reach your plant.

Buying from Indian press brake machine exporters

  • Ask which safety route the machine follows. For the European Union it should arrive with CE marking, a declaration of conformity and a manual your operators can read, and the maker should name the press brake safety standard the design follows. For North America, ask how the point of bending is guarded against local rules.
  • Ask the maker to name the safeguard at the point of bending, such as a light curtain or a laser device, and to show that the emergency stops, foot pedal and side and rear guards work before dispatch.
  • Tell the maker your site's voltage, phases and frequency so the pump motor, controller and panel are built for it. Also state the climate and room temperature range, which affects the hydraulic oil grade and cooling.
  • Confirm the tooling style and clamp so your existing punches and dies fit, and send drawings of your parts with your thickest and longest sheet so the tonnage, bed length and throat depth are right.
  • Ask for sample bends on your own material at the maker's plant, with angles measured at both ends and the middle of the bed, and a recorded test of the ram and back gauge before the machine is packed.
  • Fix the Incoterm in the contract (EXW, FOB or CIF) and ask whether your import rules or trade agreements need a Certificate of Origin. Ask for a packing list that marks every crate, with the beam, side frames, back gauge and control cabinet listed separately, plus a kit of spare seals and filters and remote support by video call.

Press Brake Machine: frequently asked questions

Who makes press brake machines in India?

diipl does not publish manufacturer names. Tell diipl the material and thickest sheet, the longest part and the bends you make. diipl then matches a manufacturer that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit, confirms its Importer Exporter Code and the certifications your market needs, and arranges a direct meeting. For this machine the audit includes a bending run at rated force along the full bed, with angles measured along the length.

What should I specify when buying a commercial press brake machine?

Start with the material, the thickest sheet and the longest part, which set the tonnage and the bed length. Then state the throat depth, stroke and open height, the number of back gauge axes, the type of crowning, the controller and the tooling style. Add the safeguard fitted, front supports for long sheets and your power supply. Ask for trial bends on your own sheet before you accept the machine.

Which standards or certifications apply to press brake machines?

The international safety standard written for this machine is ISO 6909:2026, and the European adoption is EN ISO 6909:2026. It covers hydraulic, hydraulic servo-drive, screw servo-drive and belt-spring servo-drive press brakes, and excludes pneumatic and mechanical-clutch machines, combined-technology machines, and machines for rotary folding, tube bending or roll bending. Export rules for the European Union and North America are listed under export compliance on this page. Ask the maker to name the standard its design follows.

What is the HSN code for press brake machines?

Press Brake Machines are classified under ITC-HS 84622300 (numerically controlled press brakes), within HS subheading 846223. Some related machines use a different line: 84622900 when the press brake or other bending machine for flat metal products has no numerical control and is not a profile forming machine. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export press brake machines?

Yes. The machine has to meet the safety rules of the buyer's region. For the European Union that means CE marking, which can be applied only after testing and the conformity assessment, together with a declaration of conformity. The conformity routes are under export compliance on this page. For North America, the point of bending is checked against local guarding rules. Buyers also match the electrical supply and tooling style and agree the Incoterm, packing and remote support. diipl confirms the maker's Importer Exporter Code before arranging a meeting.

Which industries buy press brake machines?

Press brakes make brackets and chassis parts for vehicles, electrical enclosures and control cabinets, and air conditioning shells and air handling units. They also form agricultural vehicle frames, roofing panels and staircases, kitchen countertops and shelves, lamp poles and power poles, and tanks and pressure vessel parts.

I manufacture press brake machines. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl studies which fabricators, enclosure makers and equipment builders need your type of press brake, such as NC, CNC, hybrid, electric or tandem, and in which regions. It then runs outreach and checks, buyer by buyer, the requirement, the funds, the authority to sign and the date to buy, before arranging a direct meeting with you. For press brakes, diipl also looks at the sheet range and bed length each buyer needs, so you meet buyers your machine can serve. Your name and contact details are never published.

How do I choose the tonnage of a press brake?

Work from the thickest sheet, its material and the longest bend. Force rises with the square of thickness and in step with bend length, and a wider die opening lowers it. One maker's chart gives about 24.9 tons for 3 mm mild steel over 1 m with a 24 mm die opening, and about 50 tons over 2 m. Stainless needs about 1.4 to 1.5 times as much. Add a margin and confirm with the maker.

What is the difference between an NC and a CNC press brake?

One maker describes an NC press brake as typically a two-axis machine, where the operator programs the cylinder stroke and back gauge movement manually and a mechanical torsion shaft keeps the two sides of the ram in step, with no real-time feedback. A CNC press brake has at least 3+1 axes, dual linear encoders giving closed-loop control of the cylinders, CNC-controlled automatic crowning and graphical programming on a touch screen.

Should I buy a hydraulic, hybrid or electric press brake?

Hydraulic machines do most of the forming work in fabrication shops. In a hybrid machine a bidirectional pump driven by a servo motor provides the motion, which gives fast response, little piping and high efficiency. Electric machines suit lighter tonnages. Choose by your thickest sheet, how many hours a day the machine runs and whether you want to avoid hydraulic oil, and ask each maker for trial bends on your own part.

How do I compensate for springback when bending sheet?

Springback is the elastic recovery after the punch lifts, so the part opens slightly. It is corrected by bending a little past the target angle. One maker's guide gives a typical overbend of 1 to 3 degrees for mild steel and 5 to 7 degrees for stainless steel, and advises testing on scrap from the same batch. On CNC machines the operator can enter a springback offset in the controller.
