What is a commercial plastic extrusion machine?

A plastic extrusion machine turns plastic granules into a continuous product. Granules fall from a hopper into a heated barrel, where a rotating screw carries them forward, melts them and builds pressure. The melt is filtered by a screen and pushed through a die, and the die gives the product its shape: a ring for pipe, a profile die for frames and ducts, a flat die for sheet, or a ring die with an air bubble for film. Equipment after the die cools, sizes and pulls the product, then cuts or winds it. Twin-screw machines are used for compounding and for heat-sensitive rigid PVC. Plants, converters and compounders run these lines.

This page covers commercial and industrial extrusion machines and lines for plants and converters; desktop and hobby units are not covered.

How diipl verifies plastic extrusion machine manufacturers

diipl checks every plastic extrusion machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For plastic extrusion machines, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A timed output test in the factory at full line speed on the buyer's resin, with the extrudate weighed over the run
  • How the screws and barrels are made or bought in, including the wear treatment, and the measuring records kept for each set
  • The gearbox, motor and thrust bearing assembly, with a load run on the test bay
  • Temperature control: every heating zone reaching its set point, with steady controller readings and sensors in the right place
  • Safety fitting: guards over the feed throat, hot barrel and haul-off nips, interlocks, emergency stops and an over-pressure device on the barrel, each checked in working order

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of plastic extrusion machines we cover

Indian plastic extrusion machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Single-screw extruder linePipe, conduit and profile makers running polyolefins or PVC
Twin-screw extruder lineCompounders, masterbatch makers, and rigid PVC pipe and profile makers
Pipe and profile extrusion lineMakers of water, irrigation and conduit pipe and of window and duct profiles
Sheet extrusion lineMakers of mono and multilayer sheet, including barrier sheet
Blown film lineFilm converters running polyethylene and polypropylene film
Monofilament extrusion lineProducers of nylon and PET monofilament

Single-screw extruder line

One rotating screw inside a heated barrel melts the plastic and conveys it to the die. Makers list it for PVC, PE, PP and other thermoplastics, used for pipe and profile work. Screws are designed around the customer's material, and feeding can be forced or gravimetric. Choose it when one polymer runs steadily on a pipe or profile line. For compounding or heavy mixing, look at the twin-screw variant.

Twin-screw extruder line

Two screws turn side by side in one barrel. Makers list co-rotating machines for compounding and masterbatch, parallel counter-rotating machines for profiles, technical pipes and compounds, and conical counter-rotating machines for rigid PVC, such as corrugated pipe and rigid profiles. Choose by the job: mixing and pelletising, or shaping rigid PVC.

Pipe and profile extrusion line

An extruder feeds a ring or profile die. The product then passes a calibration bench that sets its size, using vacuum for smooth pipe or pressurised air for corrugated pipe, and a cooling tank, either spray for large diameters at low speed or immersion. A haul-off pulls the product, which is cut to length or coiled when flexible. Choose the cutter by diameter, wall thickness and material.

Sheet extrusion line

A flat T-die lays the melt onto a polishing roll stack, then the sheet is checked for thickness online, cut in line or wound on a turret winder. One maker lists sheet lines for PS, PP, PE, PA and EVOH, for barrier and non-barrier sheet, from single layer to seven layers, at widths from 540 to 1400 mm and outputs from 150 to 1500 kg/hr. Choose it when the product is flat sheet.

Blown film line

A blown film line forms the melt into a bubble that is cooled, pulled by a haul-off and wound onto rolls. One maker lists monolayer lines for LD, LLD, HM-HDPE and PP at outputs from 50 to 1000 kg/hr and lay-flat widths from 500 to 5000 mm, with gravimetric dosing, screen changers, thickness control and tension-controlled winders. Choose it when the product is film.

Monofilament extrusion line

The melt goes to a spinning pump and a nozzle plate, then through a quench water bath. The filament is stretched and annealed in a hot water bath and a hot air oven, then wound on spools. The nozzle diameter sets the filament size, and output follows extruder output and filament size. A line can use a dual-die head with several winders. Choose it for nylon or PET monofilament.

What to specify when buying a plastic extrusion machine

A clear plastic extrusion machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Product and polymer to be runSay whether you will make pipe, profile, sheet, film, filament or pellets, and from which resin. The screw, barrel and die are built around this choice, so one line may not suit every resin.
Rated output per hour on your resinOutput depends on the material, the screw and the die. Ask for kilograms per hour in writing for your own grade, proven in a timed run, not a catalogue figure.
Screw diameter and length-to-diameter ratioOne maker lists a single-screw family from 40 to 305 mm in diameter and a groove-feed family from 50 to 150 mm at 36:1 effective length-to-diameter. Ask for both figures for your line.
Screw and barrel wear treatmentBarrels are nitrided or fitted with bimetallic liners to reduce wear. Ask what is used, how worn screws and barrels are replaced and who supplies them.
Main drive, gearbox and speed controlThe motor turns the screw through a gearbox and thrust bearing. It must hold screw speed steady, allow variable speed and keep torque constant, so ask for the motor rating and drive type.
Heating and cooling zonesEach zone has heater bands, a cooling fan or water, a sensor and a controller. Ask for the zone count, where the sensors sit and the temperature accuracy shown on the panel.
Feeding and dosingAsk for the feeding method: forced or gravimetric feeding, and a gravimetric blending unit if you add masterbatch or additives. Say whether your raw material is pellets, powder or regrind.
Screen changer and melt pumpScreen changers come manual or hydraulic, and one maker also lists a continuous, auto back-flush screen changer as an advanced feature. A melt pump steadies output. Ask how long a screen change stops the line.
Die and downstream equipmentA pipe or profile line adds a calibration bench, a cooling tank, a haul-off and a cutter or coiler. List every downstream unit in the order so nothing is missing at commissioning.
Product size, drive power and outputOne maker's PVC pipe table pairs 16 to 63 mm dual pipe with a 37 kW motor at 280 to 350 kg/hr, and 710 to 1000 mm pipe with a 160 kW motor at 1100 to 1200 kg/hr.
Layers and co-extrusionSay if you need one layer or several. Sheet lines are offered from single layer to seven layers, for barrier and non-barrier sheet. Ask how many extruders feed the die.
Melt pressure and over-pressure protectionA melt pressure reading shows how stable the process is. All extruders should have an over-pressure device such as a rupture disk or shear pin, and at least one melt pressure measurement.
Guarding and emergency stopsCheck for a guard or safe-distance hopper at the feed throat, guards or insulation above 80 degrees Celsius, die splash guards, guarded haul-off nips, and emergency stops at every feeding position when a haul-off is fed from both sides.
Controls and diagnosticsAsk what the controller offers: live monitoring, stored recipes, alarms and remote diagnostics. Remote access lets the maker trace a fault without travelling.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for plastic extrusion machines

Plastic extrusion machines are classified under ITC-HS 84772000 (extruders), within HS subheading 847720 (machinery; extruders, for working rubber or plastics or for the manufacture of products from these materials). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

Some machines on this page use a different line:

  • 84440010 (machines for extruding man-made textile materials) when the line spins man made textile filament or yarn, such as a polyester or polypropylene yarn line.
  • 84775900 (other, within subheading 847759: machinery; for moulding or forming, for working rubber or plastics or for the manufacture of products from these materials, n.e.c. in this chapter) when the machine is an extruder with its pelletiser built in as one machine, a haul off puller shipped without the extruder, or a film line that also stretches the film to orient it.

No official text we could confirm settles the line for a monofilament extrusion line, so confirm it before you file.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity

Indian plastic extrusion machine makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying plastic extrusion machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a plastic extrusion machine in India

  • Check that the tax invoice shows the maker's own GSTIN and lists the extruder, gearbox, drive and every downstream unit with serial numbers.
  • Settle the foundation, floor space, three-phase power, cooling water and compressed air before the line ships. The feed throat is water cooled, and a pipe line usually has a vacuum calibration bench and a cooling tank, so the maker's layout drawing should show each connection.
  • Make commissioning a timed trial on your own resin at full line speed, with the output weighed and written on a sheet both sides sign.
  • Arrange hands-on training for operators and setters in start-up, purging, die changes and threading the haul-off. Courses in plastics extrusion for new operators are also run by a government plastics institute.
  • Agree a spares kit at order time: screens, heater bands, thermocouples, cooling fans and rupture disks. Ask what response time the maker commits to for a service visit.
  • Agree who unloads and positions the extruder base, gearbox and long downstream tanks, who brings the crane, and whether the line ships in sections.

Buying from Indian plastic extrusion machine exporters

  • A line bound for the European Union should come with a declaration of conformity and CE marking. Find out which European safety standard the extruder was built to and which one the haul-off follows, since each has its own.
  • Put your plant's voltage, phase count and frequency in the order before the panel is built. The drive motor, heater bands, vacuum pump and controls are wired for it, and an extrusion line has many separate motors and heaters.
  • Send your resin grade, product size and layer structure early. The screw, die and calibration or roll tooling are built around them.
  • Before dispatch, get a signed test run report with the output weighed, wiring and piping drawings, the operation manual in your language and a spare parts list with part numbers.
  • Check these safety points on an extruder before you accept it: a guarded feed throat, a fixed or interlocked guard on the screen changer, guards or insulation on hot parts with warning signs where the die must stay exposed, guarded haul-off nips, and emergency stops at every feeding position where the haul-off is fed from both sides.
  • Settle the Incoterm and say who arranges the Certificate of Origin. Ask how screws, dies and the control panel are protected for the sea voyage, and ask for remote diagnostics so a fault can be traced without a visit.

Plastic Extrusion Machine: frequently asked questions

Who makes plastic extrusion machines in India?

diipl does not publish manufacturer names. Share the product, resin and hourly output you want to extrude. diipl then finds an Indian maker whose GSTIN has been verified and whose factory has been audited for capacity, checks its Importer Exporter Code and the certificates your target market asks for, and sets up a direct meeting. For extrusion lines the factory audit looks at screw and barrel work, a timed output run, and guarding at the feed throat and haul-off.

What should I specify when buying a commercial plastic extrusion machine?

Give the product (pipe, profile, sheet, film, filament or pellets), the resin grade, the size range and the output per hour you need. Then ask for the screw diameter and length-to-diameter ratio, wear treatment of the screw and barrel, drive and gearbox, heating zones, screen changer, die and downstream units, guarding, controls and utilities. Get the output in writing for your own resin.

Which standards or certifications apply to plastic extrusion machines?

A European safety standard written for screw extruders is EN 1114-1:2011. It covers screw extruders for plastics and rubber together with hoppers, roller feeds, crammer feeders, screen changers, melt pumps, melt pipes, static mixers and extruder heads. Haul-offs, guards and electrical equipment have their own standards, listed further down this page. Ask which were applied and ask to see the risk assessment.

What is the HSN code for plastic extrusion machines?

Plastic Extrusion Machines are classified under ITC-HS 84772000 (extruders), within HS subheading 847720. Some related machines use a different line: 84440010 when the line spins man made textile filament or yarn, such as a polyester or polypropylene yarn line; 84775900 when the machine is an extruder with its pelletiser built in as one machine, a haul off puller shipped without the extruder, or a film line that also stretches the film to orient it. No official text we could confirm settles the line for a monofilament extrusion line, so confirm it before you file. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export plastic extrusion machines?

Yes, an Indian maker with an export-ready line can supply an overseas plant. The buyer should receive a conformity declaration, a test run report, wiring and piping drawings and a manual in the buyer's language. diipl confirms the maker's Importer Exporter Code before a meeting. In the European Union the Machinery Regulation applies on a mandatory basis from 20 January 2027. Voltage and frequency must match the buyer's site, and spares and remote support should be agreed up front.

Which industries buy plastic extrusion machines?

Pipe makers for water distribution, gas networks, electrical conduit and irrigation buy them, and so do window and duct profile makers. Film and sheet converters, compounders and masterbatch makers, and monofilament producers also run extrusion lines. The die and downstream units differ by product, so state the product first.

I manufacture plastic extrusion machines. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl works out which buyers need extrusion lines, for example pipe makers, film and sheet converters and compounders, and in which regions, then contacts them for you. Before any introduction it confirms the buyer has a real requirement, funds to buy, a person who can sign and a purchase date. A direct meeting with you follows. Your name and contact details are never published. Come ready to show a timed output run and your safety file.

Should I choose a single-screw or a twin-screw plastic extrusion machine?

A single-screw machine gives high head pressure but relatively poor mixing, so mixing sections are added to the screw when mixing matters. A twin-screw machine mixes better, and its main uses are rigid PVC profile, where the material is heat sensitive, and compounding. Co-rotating screws are well suited to mixing and compounding. Counter-rotating screws give low shear and steady melt temperature, which suits rigid PVC.

How do I size a plastic extrusion machine for the output I need?

Start from the product and the kilograms per hour you need on your resin. Output depends on the material, the screw and the die, and barrels commonly run from 24:1 to 36:1 in length to diameter, with longer barrels giving more output. Ask the maker to prove the rating in a timed run on your resin, and leave room in the downstream cooling and haul-off.

What safety guarding should a new plastic extrusion machine have?

Official safety guidance for extruder lines asks for guarding or a safe-distance hopper at the feed throat, guards or insulation on hot parts above 80 degrees Celsius with warning signs where parts must stay exposed, splash guards at the die where practical, guarded haul-off nips and cutters, and, where a haul-off can be fed from both sides, emergency stops reachable from all feeding positions. It notes that a significant number of accidents happen during purging, die changes and haul-off feeding.

What wears out on a plastic extrusion machine and what spares should I stock?

The screw and barrel wear, which is why barrels are nitrided or fitted with bimetallic liners. Screen packs block with contaminants and must be changed regularly. Each heating zone has heater bands, a cooling fan, a sensor and a controller, and a rupture disk protects the barrel from over-pressure. Stock screens, heater bands, thermocouples, fans and rupture disks, and ask the maker where screws and barrels come from.
