Verified Drilling Rig Manufacturers in India
A drilling rig makes deep holes for water wells, building foundations, soil investigation and blast holes. Drilling contractors, foundation firms and quarry operators buy it. diipl introduces them to a verified Indian maker and sets up a direct meeting.
Also called: borewell drilling rig, water well drilling rig, DTH drilling rig, truck mounted drilling rig, piling rig.

What is a commercial drilling rig?
A drilling rig is a machine that turns and pushes a string of steel rods into the ground to make a deep, narrow hole. A mast holds the rods upright, a hydraulic rotary head turns them, and a winch and feed system lift and push them. In hard rock, a hammer on the end of the string, usually driven by compressed air, breaks the rock into chips. In soft ground, a rotating bit works while drilling mud carries the cuttings up to the surface. The rig is carried on a truck, a tractor, a trolley or crawler tracks. Contractors use it for borewells, ground investigation, bored piles and blast holes.
This page covers commercial and industrial drilling rigs for water wells, ground investigation, foundations and blast holes; hand-operated and home-use borewell kits, oil and gas rigs and workshop drilling machines for metal parts are not covered.
How diipl verifies drilling rig manufacturers
diipl checks every drilling rig manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For drilling rigs, the capacity audit also covers:
- A drilling run in the maker's yard: the mast raised, the rig levelled on its jacks, rods added and pulled back, and the rotary head turned under load.
- A pressure test of the hydraulic pump, rotary head motor, feed cylinders and hoses at the rated pressure, with no leaks and no jack sinking.
- The mast, sub-frame and chassis or tractor mounting welds, plus the wire rope and winch, inspected with the mast raised and lowered several times.
- For a DTH rig, a hammer run on a bit with the matching compressor, checking air connections and rod joints.
- Thread gauge checks on rods and bits, so that spare rods and bits from the maker fit the rig.
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of drilling rigs we cover
Indian drilling rig manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Truck-mounted DTH water well rig | Borewell and tubewell drilling contractors who move between sites by road |
| Direct rotary mud drilling rig | Water well contractors working in soft, sandy or muddy ground |
| Tractor-mounted drilling rig | Small borewell contractors drilling shallower holes |
| Geotechnical and soil investigation rig | Soil testing firms, ground investigation contractors and construction contractors |
| Crawler-mounted DTH drilling rig | Quarry and mining operators, rock excavation and foundation contractors |
| Hydraulic rotary piling rig | Foundation and piling contractors |
Truck-mounted DTH water well rig
The mast, rotary head, winch and four hydraulic levelling jacks sit on a truck, and the rig is driven from the truck engine through a power take-off or from a separate deck engine. An air hammer breaks hard rock, so a compressor must supply the air. One maker lists 6.5 inch holes to 300 m and 10 inch holes to 150 m with 4.5 inch rod. Choose it if you move between borewell sites by road.
Direct rotary mud drilling rig
A direct rotary rig turns a bit on hollow rods while water and drilling mud, pumped down the rods, carry the cuttings up the hole. It needs a mud pump and a pit for the returning mud. It is used in soft ground such as sand and clay, where a rotating bit can cut without a hammer. For hard rock, the Central Ground Water Board brought in DTH hammer rigs. Choose it for sand and mud formations.
Tractor-mounted drilling rig
The rig is fitted on a tractor and driven from the tractor engine through a power take-off gearbox. For mud drilling the maker lists a centrifugal pump. For hard rock it needs a hammer bit and an air compressor, and the maker says the compressor travels on another vehicle. Tractor rigs are generally used for shallower holes than truck rigs. Choose it for shallower borewell work.
Geotechnical and soil investigation rig
A rig for ground investigation. It drills boreholes to take soil and rock samples and to test the ground. One such test is the standard penetration test, which BIS sets out in IS 2131:2025. The rig may sit on a truck or on crawler tracks, and rods, casings or augers are added as the hole deepens. Choose it for site investigation before foundations are designed.
Crawler-mounted DTH drilling rig
The rig is carried on crawler tracks instead of a road vehicle, so it can move across rough ground on a rock or construction site. A down-the-hole hammer has a piston that strikes the bit directly. It is used for blast holes in open-pit mines and for piling, footings and soil nailing. Choose a crawler rig if you drill many holes on one site.
Hydraulic rotary piling rig
A heavy rig on a crawler undercarriage with a three-section foldable mast and a high-torque rotary head, built to bore large piles with or without drilling fluid and casing. One model lists a rotary torque of 210 kNm, a drilling depth of 60 m and a maximum drilling diameter of 1800 mm. Choose it for deep, large-diameter bored piles.
What to specify when buying a drilling rig
A clear drilling rig specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Rated depth for each hole diameter and rod size | Depth falls as the hole gets wider. One maker's truck rig lists 6.5 inch holes to 300 m and 10 inch holes to 150 m with 4.5 inch rod. Ask for the table at your hole size. |
| Drilling method: DTH air hammer, mud rotary or both | The ground decides the method. The Central Ground Water Board runs 24 direct rotary, 52 DTH and 2 dual rotary rigs, and brought in DTH rigs for hard rock. State your ground before you choose. |
| Compressor air volume and pressure | A DTH hammer runs on compressed air. One maker lists 900 cfm at 200 psi or 1,100 cfm at 300 psi as suitable for its truck rig. Ask who supplies the compressor and which vehicle carries it. |
| Hoist pull-up and pull-down force and mast capacity | These decide the weight of rod string and casing it can lift and push. One maker's truck rig lists a pull-up force of 8,591 kg, a pull-down force of 5,897 kg and a mast rated at 17 tons. |
| Rotary head torque and speed range | Torque turns the rods and bit, and speed must suit the bit. One maker lists a maximum rotary head torque of 303 kg-m. Ask for torque and speed range, with units written out. |
| Prime mover and hydraulic pressure | Rigs run from the truck engine through a power take-off or from a separate deck engine. Ask which drive is fitted, what hydraulic pressure the system is rated for, and for a pressure test record. |
| Carrier: truck, tractor, trolley, trailer or crawler | The carrier decides road travel and site access. One maker offers its small rig on a trolley or trailer, a mini truck or a crawler. Ask for the carrier's rated load and the ground it can handle. |
| Drill rods: diameter, length and rod changer | Rod size sets strength and depth. One maker's truck rig uses 4.5 inch rod in 4.5 m lengths, with a manually operated three-rod changer and an auxiliary pull-up winch rated 2,000 kg. Ask how many rods the rig carries. |
| Water injection pump and mud pump | Dust control and mud circulation need pumps. One maker fits an 80 L per minute water injection pump driven by a hydraulic motor and offers a hydraulic mud pump as an option. Ask what is standard. |
| Hammer and bit sizes supplied with the rig | Hammers and bits must match the hole and the compressor. One maker lists button bits from 3 inch to 18 inch. Ask which hammer and bit sizes come with the rig and who supplies spares. |
| Mast height and clearance on site | Mast height decides whether the rig can work under power lines or inside a shed. One maker lists 8.2 m for a 17 ton truck rig. Ask for the height raised and the height folded for travel. |
| Piling rig: rated torque, pile diameter and depth | Piling rigs are rated by output torque, pile diameter and pile depth. One made-in-India model lists 235 kNm, 2000 mm and 68 m. Ask which tools and rod set the depth figure assumes. |
| Standard penetration test equipment on ground investigation rigs | Ground investigation often includes the standard penetration test, which BIS covers in IS 2131:2025 (Standard Penetration Test of Soil - Method of Test). Ask what hammer and sampler the rig supplies and how the hammer is checked. |
| Safety design standard the rig was built to | Part 1 of the European safety standard for drilling and foundation equipment covers transport, assembly, use, maintenance and scrapping, and other parts add rules by rig type. Ask which parts the design follows. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for drilling rigs
The code for drilling rigs depends on how the rig is carried and built onto its carrier, that is, whether it is simply mounted on an essentially complete motor truck chassis, built into a chassis made for it, carried on its own crawler tracks, or towed or coupled to a tractor and sold without one. Choose the line that matches your machine:
- 87052000 (mobile drilling derricks) when the rig is simply mounted on an essentially complete motor truck chassis that keeps its engine, gearbox, steering and brakes, as a mobile drilling derrick is.
- 84304110 (tube well drilling and core drilling machinery) when the rig is self propelled and used to drill water wells or core holes, for example a borewell rig built into its own chassis.
- 84304130 (rock drilling machinery) when the rig is self propelled and used for rock drilling, for example a crawler down the hole rig for blast holes.
- 84304190 (other, within subheading 843041: boring or sinking machinery; self-propelled, n.e.c. in heading no. 8430) when the rig is self propelled and is used for none of the named uses of tube well and core drilling, oil and gas well drilling or rock drilling.
- 84304900 (other, within subheading 843049: boring and sinking machinery; not self-propelled) when the rig is not self propelled, for example one towed on a trailer, set on skids or coupled to a tractor and sold without it.
Drilling rigs are boring machinery in the tariff, and that heading splits on whether the machine is self propelled. A rig that runs on its own crawler tracks is self propelled boring machinery. A rig that is towed, set on skids or coupled to a tractor and sold without it is not self propelled. A rig fitted on a motor truck chassis is different again: the motor vehicle heading for mobile drilling derricks covers a lorry fitted with a derrick assembly, winches and other drilling appliances, while a rig and chassis that are specially designed for each other and form one integral mechanical unit stay with the boring machinery. So the code follows how the rig is carried and how it is built onto its carrier, and the variants on the page do not say this for every rig.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.
A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying drilling rigs right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a drilling rig in India
- Ask for a GST invoice that names the model, the mounting (truck, tractor, trolley or tracks) and the serial numbers, issued under the maker's own GSTIN, and keep the depth table and the manual with it.
- Decide who supplies the truck or tractor. If the rig is fitted on your own vehicle, settle in writing who does the fitting, the alignment of the power take-off and the road papers for the vehicle.
- Agree the compressor early. A DTH rig needs a compressor with the air volume and pressure in the maker's table, and it often rides as a separate unit on its own vehicle, so decide whether it is in the order.
- Put commissioning in the contract: levelling on the jacks, raising the mast, a trial hole in your own ground, and training for the crew on rod handling, hammer and bit changes and safe work near the rotating rods.
- Before you drill borewells, check your state's rules on registering drilling agencies and informing the local authority. The Supreme Court's borewell safety directions, as set out in the NDRF procedure on borewell rescue, ask for registration of drilling agencies with the district administration, a signboard and fencing during construction.
- Fix the spares and service plan in writing: bits, hammers, rods, hoses, seals and wire rope, and a service contact who can reach your site.
Buying from Indian drilling rig exporters
- Ask which safety standard the rig follows. For the European Union, a water well, ground investigation or piling rig is covered by a part of the European drilling and foundation equipment standard, so the maker should name the part, show the conformity assessment it followed, and fit the CE mark only after that is done. A blast hole drill for open-pit mining is excluded from the part covering mobile drill rigs, so ask which standard applies to it.
- Match the compressor. Ask for the air volume and pressure the hammer needs, in both imperial and metric units, and decide whether the compressor ships with the rig or is bought locally.
- Send your hole sizes, depths and ground type, and ask for the rated depth table at those sizes and the rod size it assumes. A table for a small hole does not hold for a wider one.
- Ask for the papers an importer of a rig needs: invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin where your trade rules ask for it, operator and maintenance manuals, parts list and hydraulic diagram.
- Agree how the rig ships: mast folded and lashed, rods, hammers and bits crated with a list, and the truck or tractor either shipped with the rig or bought locally. Fix the Incoterm in the contract.
- Add a starter set of bits, hammers, hoses and seals and a video support plan to the order, because an engineer's visit to a remote drilling site takes time.
Standards and certifications for drilling rigs

Drilling Rig: frequently asked questions
Who makes drilling rigs in India?
diipl does not list maker names here. Tell diipl the hole size, depth, ground (hard rock, sand or clay) and how you want the rig carried. diipl finds a maker whose GSTIN is verified and whose works has passed a capacity audit, checks its Importer Exporter Code and the safety marking your region asks for, and sets up the introduction. For a rig, the audit includes a drilling run with the mast raised, a hydraulic pressure test and a check of the depth table against your hole size.
Which depth, hole diameter and compressor should I ask for in a borewell rig?
Start from your hole diameter, depth and ground. Rated depth falls as the hole widens: one maker lists 6.5 inch holes to 300 m and 10 inch holes to 150 m with 4.5 inch rod on a truck rig. A DTH rig also needs a compressor, and the same maker lists 900 cfm at 200 psi or 1,100 cfm at 300 psi. Then check hoist force, mast rating and rod size against the table.
Which standards or certifications apply to drilling rigs?
BIS lists IS 11830 (Part 1):2024, general requirements for hydraulic water well rigs of the DTH hammer or mud rotary kind. It also lists standards for the round kelly of direct rotary rigs and for blast hole drilling rigs, shown under Indian compliance on this page. For the European Union, EN 16228 is the harmonised safety standard series for drilling and foundation equipment. Ask each maker which of these the model follows.
What is the HSN code for drilling rigs?
The code for drilling rigs depends on how the rig is carried and built onto its carrier, that is, whether it is simply mounted on an essentially complete motor truck chassis, built into a chassis made for it, carried on its own crawler tracks, or towed or coupled to a tractor and sold without one: 87052000 when the rig is simply mounted on an essentially complete motor truck chassis that keeps its engine, gearbox, steering and brakes, as a mobile drilling derrick is; 84304110 when the rig is self propelled and used to drill water wells or core holes, for example a borewell rig built into its own chassis; 84304130 when the rig is self propelled and used for rock drilling, for example a crawler down the hole rig for blast holes; 84304190 when the rig is self propelled and is used for none of the named uses of tube well and core drilling, oil and gas well drilling or rock drilling; 84304900 when the rig is not self propelled, for example one towed on a trailer, set on skids or coupled to a tractor and sold without it. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.
Can Indian manufacturers export drilling rigs?
Yes, once the rig meets the safety rules of the importing region and the maker holds a valid Importer Exporter Code. For the European Union, drilling rigs are not named in Annex I Parts A and B of Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, the lists of higher-risk machinery with stricter conformity procedures. Buyers in other regions set their own rules, so ask each buyer which safety standard their site follows.
Which industries buy drilling rigs?
Buyers are water well and borehole contractors, ground investigation and foundation firms, and quarry and open-pit mine operators who drill blast holes. The European safety standard for mobile drill rigs lists civil engineering, geotechnical engineering (ground investigation, anchoring, soil nailing, mini-piling, ground stabilization and grouting), water well drilling, geothermal installations, landfill drilling, underpinning and tunnelling as uses.
I make drilling rigs. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl studies which contractors need your class of rig, such as borewell agencies, ground investigation firms, foundation contractors and quarries, and in which regions, then reaches out to them. Before an introduction, diipl checks that the buyer has a real requirement, a budget, a person who can sign and a purchase date. Bring your depth table by hole size, your compressor and tooling options and your test-run records, because a buyer will want to compare them. Your company details stay off the site.
Should I choose a DTH rig or a mud rotary rig?
The Central Ground Water Board says drilling began in alluvial tracts and DTH rigs were introduced in the mid-eighties for hard rock terrains. It runs 24 direct rotary, 52 DTH and 2 dual rotary rigs. Choose a DTH rig with a compressor for hard rock, a mud rotary rig for soft ground, or a rig that does both if your sites vary.
Do I need to register as a drilling agency in India?
The Supreme Court order of 11 February 2010, reproduced in the NDRF's standard operating procedure for borewell rescue, says registration of all drilling agencies, government, semi-government or private, should be mandatory with the district administration. The land owner must inform the authorities in writing at least 15 days before drilling, and a signboard with the agency's address must stand near the well. Check your state's own rules as well.
Is the compressor included with a DTH rig, and how big must it be?
Often it is a separate item. One maker says its tractor-mounted rig needs another vehicle to carry the air compressor, and the same maker sells a compressor truck as its own product. Settle early whether the compressor is in your order. Ask which compressor the depth table assumes, including the air volume and pressure it must deliver.
What are rotary piling rigs rated in?
Rotary piling rigs are rated by output torque, maximum pile diameter and pile depth. One made-in-India model lists a maximum output torque of 235 kNm, a pile depth of 68 m and a pile diameter of 2000 mm, and works with a continuous flight auger, a double rotary head or a kelly bar. Ask which tool set the depth figure assumes.
