What is a commercial EOT and overhead crane?
An electric overhead travelling crane, or EOT crane, runs on two parallel rails fixed along opposite sides of a building. A bridge made of one or two girders spans the gap between the rails. A hoist and trolley travel along the bridge, so the hook can reach any point in the bay as the bridge moves along the building. Electric motors drive the lifting, cross travel and long travel motions. The crane is designed for a stated safe working load and for a duty class that describes how hard and how often it works. A gantry crane uses the same bridge and trolley but stands on legs instead of building rails.
This page covers industrial EOT and overhead cranes for factories, steel works, workshops and warehouses; mobile cranes, tower cranes and light hobby hoists are not covered.
How diipl verifies EOT and overhead crane manufacturers
diipl checks every EOT and overhead crane manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For EOT and overhead cranes, the capacity audit also covers:
- Girder fabrication on jigs, with camber and straightness checked on the factory floor
- Welding procedures, welder qualification records and weld inspection of girders and end carriages
- In-house or approved machining of wheels, drums, shafts and gearbox parts
- A test area where hoisting, cross travel and long travel motions can be run and load tested before dispatch
- Electrical panel assembly and wiring, with testing of motors, brakes and limit switches
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of EOT and overhead cranes we cover
Indian EOT and overhead crane manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Single girder EOT crane | Workshops and plants with lighter duty lifting |
| Double girder EOT crane | Plants lifting heavy loads across wide bays |
| Underslung (suspended) crane | Plants that want column-free floor space and handle modest loads |
| Gantry and semi-gantry crane | Yards and plants without runway columns |
| Wire rope hoist and chain hoist (lifting unit) | Crane builders and plants choosing the lifting unit for a new or upgraded crane |
Single girder EOT crane
One bridge beam carries the hoist trolley, and the bridge travels on runway rails carried by beams fixed to the building columns. It is the most widely used layout and suits lighter duty work, with a capacity commonly cited up to about 15 tonnes. Choose it when the lifting duty is light.
Double girder EOT crane
Two bridge beams carry the trolley. This layout handles much heavier loads and longer spans than a single girder crane, and it gives more lifting height because the hoist travels on top of the beams with the hook between them. Choose it for heavy loads or wide bays.
Underslung (suspended) crane
A suspended crane has its runway rails fixed to the roof structure instead of floor-mounted columns. Removing the support columns frees floor space but reduces the maximum lifting capacity. Choose it where you want a column-free floor and the loads are modest.
Gantry and semi-gantry crane
A gantry crane has its bridge supported on legs that run on rails at ground level. A semi-gantry has one rail at ground level and the other overhead, often along the outside of an existing building. Choose it where a runway on building columns is not practical.
Wire rope hoist and chain hoist (lifting unit)
The hoist is the lifting unit on the trolley. A wire rope hoist winds rope on a drum, and many industrial cranes use it. A chain hoist runs chain over a sprocket and is generally smaller than a wire rope hoist of the same capacity. Choose by capacity, lifting height and how often the crane works.
What to specify when buying an EOT and overhead crane
A clear EOT and overhead crane specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Safe working load of the main hoist and any auxiliary hoist | The crane is designed and tested for this load. State the heaviest load including lifting beams, magnets or other attachments, not only the product weight. |
| Span, centre to centre of the runway rails | Sets the bridge length. Measure between rail centres on site and give the maker the runway length and the building drawings. |
| Height of lift and hook approach to the end walls | Decides the rope or chain length and how close the hook can reach the walls and roof. Give the headroom available under the roof truss or crane beam. |
| Crane duty class and mechanism classes | IS 3177 recommends that a crane is designed on its duty classes and application, and it uses crane classes A1 to A8 and mechanism classes M1 to M8. State your lifts per shift and typical loads. |
| Hoisting, cross travel and long travel speeds, and how speed is controlled | Speeds set the cycle time and how gently loads move. Ask whether each motion uses a single speed, two speeds or a variable frequency drive. |
| Control method: pendant, radio remote or cabin | Decides where the operator stands and how well the load can be seen. State it early so the maker can plan the electrical panel and wiring. |
| Power supply and the way current reaches the moving crane | Motors and panel are built for your supply. Give the voltage, phases and frequency, and agree whether current is fed by bus bars, a conductor system or a festoon cable. |
| Working environment (indoor or outdoor, temperature, dust, corrosion, hot metal) | Outdoor, hot, dusty or corrosive sites need different insulation, paint, brakes and protection. Describe the site so the maker selects suitable parts. |
| Runway beams, rails and wheel loads on the building | The building columns and runway beams carry the crane. Ask for maximum wheel loads and rail size so your structural engineer can check them. IS 807 covers the structural design of cranes and hoists. |
| Hoist type and trolley arrangement (wire rope or chain) | Wire rope and chain hoists work differently and suit different jobs. Indian Standards cover both, for example IS 3938 for electric wire rope hoists. |
| Safety devices: overload protection, hoist and travel limit switches, buffers, emergency stop, warning alarm | These protect people and the crane. List each device in the order and check every one during the test run. |
| Brakes, wheels and gearboxes: type, material and rating | Brakes hold the load and stop each motion. Ask for the brake type on every motion, the wheel material and the gearbox rating against the duty class. |
| Material test and weld inspection records for the girders | Girders carry the load. Ask for material test certificates, welder qualification and weld inspection records, and ask which structural code the girder design follows. IS 807 is the Indian code of practice for the structural portion of cranes and hoists. |
| Load test, certificates and manuals at handover | Ask for a load test at handover, a test certificate, drawings, electrical diagrams and a spares list, so your safety officer and maintenance team have records from the first day. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for EOT and overhead cranes
EOT and overhead cranes are classified under ITC-HS 84261100 (overhead travelling cranes on fixed support), within HS subheading 842611 (cranes; overhead travelling cranes on fixed support). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.
Some machines on this page use a different line:
- 84261900 (other, within subheading 842619: cranes; transporter, gantry and bridge cranes) when the crane is a gantry crane that runs on legs along rails at ground level.
- 84251110 (hoists) when the item is a standalone electric hoist and not a complete crane.
A semi-gantry crane, with legs on one side and a raised runway on the other, is not settled by any official text we could confirm, so confirm its line before you file.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity
Indian EOT and overhead crane makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.
A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying EOT and overhead cranes right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying an EOT and overhead crane in India
- Ask for a GST tax invoice that lists the crane, the HSN code and the tax rate, and check the maker's GSTIN on it.
- Agree installation and commissioning in the contract: erection on your runway, a load test and handover of test certificates.
- Ask for operator training and a written safe operating procedure for the crane.
- Plan spares and service. Ask for a recommended spares list, an annual maintenance option and the response time of the service team.
- Make sure the runway beams and rails are ready and aligned before the crane arrives, and plan how long girders will be unloaded and lifted at your site.
- Keep the load test certificate and the examination records of the crane in your factory safety file.
Buying from Indian EOT and overhead crane exporters
- Agree the Incoterm in the contract, such as EXW, FOB or CIF, and who arranges loading of long girders onto containers or flat racks.
- Ask for a Certificate of Origin if your import rules or trade agreements need one.
- Match the electrical supply. State the voltage, number of phases and frequency of your site, and the current feed system you want.
- Check certifications for your region. Machines for the European Union need CE marking, and other regions have their own rules, so ask your inspector early.
- Ask for a spares kit with the order and a plan for remote support by phone and video call.
- Insist on export packing: support frames and covers for girders and end carriages, protection for paint and machined parts, and marked parts for assembly.

EOT and Overhead Crane: frequently asked questions
Who makes EOT cranes in India?
diipl does not publish manufacturer names. You tell diipl your requirement, such as safe working load, span and duty class. diipl then matches a manufacturer that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit, confirms its Importer-Exporter Code and the certifications your market needs, and arranges a direct meeting.
What should I specify when buying a commercial EOT crane?
Give the safe working load, the span between rail centres, the height of lift, the duty class, the working environment and the power supply. Also state the control method, the speeds you need, the runway and building details and the hoist type. Ask for a load test, test certificates and drawings at handover.
Which standards or certifications apply to EOT cranes?
BIS publishes IS 3177 as the code of practice for electric overhead travelling cranes and gantry cranes, and it points to IS 807 for the structural design of cranes and hoists. The compliance section also lists the Indian Standards for electric wire rope hoists and electric chain hoists. Ask the maker which of them the crane follows, and see the export certifications for the European Union.
What is the HSN code for EOT and overhead cranes?
EOT and Overhead Cranes are classified under ITC-HS 84261100 (overhead travelling cranes on fixed support), within HS subheading 842611. Some related machines use a different line: 84261900 when the crane is a gantry crane that runs on legs along rails at ground level; 84251110 when the item is a standalone electric hoist and not a complete crane. A semi-gantry crane, with legs on one side and a raised runway on the other, is not settled by any official text we could confirm, so confirm its line before you file. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.
Can Indian manufacturers export EOT cranes?
Yes, when the crane meets the rules of the destination region. For the European Union that means CE marking, which can only be affixed after testing and the conformity assessment procedure. Buyers abroad should also check the electrical supply, spares and remote support, and agree the Incoterm and the packing of long girders. Before arranging a meeting, diipl confirms the manufacturer's Importer-Exporter Code and the certifications your market needs.
Which industries buy EOT cranes?
Overhead cranes serve factory and workshop buildings where heavy parts move during manufacturing or maintenance and downtime matters. That makes factories, workshops and plants that move heavy parts the main buyers. Gantry cranes, which stand on legs, serve open yards where a runway on building columns is not practical.
I manufacture EOT cranes. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl researches which buyer segments and regions need EOT cranes, then runs outreach to them. Each buyer is verified for need, budget, authority and timeline before any introduction. diipl then arranges a direct meeting. Your name and contact details are never published.
What is the difference between a single girder and a double girder EOT crane?
A single girder crane has one bridge beam and suits lighter duty, with a capacity commonly cited up to about 15 tonnes. A double girder crane has two beams and is used for heavier loads and longer spans. The hoist runs on top of the girders, which gives more lifting height than a single girder crane.
What is a crane duty class and why does it matter?
Duty class rates how hard and how often a crane works. IS 3177 recommends that the crane is designed on its duty classes and application, and it uses crane classes A1 to A8 and mechanism classes M1 to M8. State your lifts per shift and typical loads, and ask the maker to confirm the class in writing.
Does my building need changes to carry an EOT crane?
The crane runs on rails carried by runway beams fixed to building columns, so the columns and beams must carry the crane's wheel loads. Ask the maker for the maximum wheel loads and rail size and have your structural engineer check the building. A suspended crane hangs from the roof structure instead, and that must be checked too.
Should I choose a wire rope hoist or a chain hoist?
A wire rope hoist winds rope on a drum, and many industrial cranes use it. A chain hoist runs chain over a sprocket and is generally smaller at the same capacity. Choose by capacity, lifting height and how often the crane works, and ask the maker to explain the choice and the Indian Standard the hoist follows.
