What is a commercial industrial chiller?

An industrial chiller is a packaged refrigeration unit that cools water, or a water and glycol mix, to a set temperature and sends it round a loop to the machines that make heat. A compressor raises the pressure of a refrigerant, a condenser passes the heat to air or to water, an expansion valve drops the pressure, and an evaporator takes heat from the returning liquid. A pump, a tank and a controller usually sit in the same frame. Factories use chillers to keep plastic moulds, reactors, dairy and drink lines, laser systems and metal finishing processes at a steady temperature. This page covers electric chillers; heat-driven absorption units are not covered.

This page covers electric chillers for factories, plants and institutions; home-use units, small bench or laboratory units and heat-driven absorption chillers are not covered.

How diipl verifies industrial chiller manufacturers

diipl checks every industrial chiller manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For industrial chillers, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A loaded test on the factory bench at the quoted leaving liquid temperature, with flow, inlet and outlet temperatures and power input logged for the whole run
  • Refrigerant circuit workmanship: brazed joints, leak test and pressure test records, and a vacuum and charge record kept for each unit
  • Where the compressors, evaporators and condensers come from, with purchase papers and serial numbers that match the units on the floor
  • Control panel build: neat labelled wiring, and safety devices such as the flow switch, pressure cut-outs and phase relay tested by a live trip
  • Evaporator side checks: strainer fitted, flow loss alarm working and freeze protection tested before the unit leaves the factory

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of industrial chillers we cover

Indian industrial chiller manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Air-cooled chillerPlants with limited or poor-quality water and no cooling tower
Water-cooled chillerLarger plants that already run a cooling water loop
Scroll chillerSmall and mid-size plants with steady process loads
Screw chillerLarge plants and central process cooling plants with changing loads
Low-temperature glycol chillerPlants whose process needs liquid colder than plain water can carry

Air-cooled chiller

Fans blow outside air through a condenser coil to carry the heat away, so the unit needs no cooling tower, make-up water or condenser water treatment. It arrives as one packaged unit with a single source of responsibility. Its heat rejection follows the outdoor dry-bulb temperature, so it uses more energy than a water-cooled unit. Choose it where water is scarce and there is open space for airflow.

Water-cooled chiller

The condenser passes heat to water, which is often cooled in a cooling tower, so heat rejection follows the lower wet-bulb temperature and the chiller uses less energy than a comparable air-cooled unit. The full system also needs the tower, condenser water pumps and water treatment, and the buyer should compare all of it. Choose it for larger loads or where a cooling water loop already exists.

Scroll chiller

A scroll chiller uses several scroll compressors, typically of equal size, piped over multiple refrigerant circuits. Capacity is added in steps by switching compressors on, rather than modulating smoothly, which is its main drawback. If one compressor fails the chiller loses some capacity but stays in service. It suits smaller and mid-size process loads and can be air-cooled or water-cooled.

Screw chiller

A screw chiller compresses refrigerant between rotating screws and is used for larger loads than scroll units. A slide vane limits refrigerant delivery to the compressor, so output can be varied smoothly from 100 to 20 percent of capacity, with very good full-load and part-load efficiency. Screw compressors are generally louder than scroll. It can be air-cooled or water-cooled. Choose it for large or changing heat loads.

Low-temperature glycol chiller

When the process liquid must be colder than plain water can carry, the loop runs on a water and glycol mix, typically 10 to 50 percent glycol, with a corrosion inhibitor. A lower set point puts more load on the refrigeration circuit, so the same frame delivers less cooling than at a warm set point. Choose it when the process needs liquid colder than plain water allows, and state the coldest leaving temperature in the order.

What to specify when buying an industrial chiller

A clear industrial chiller specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Cooling capacity at your own site conditionsEU rules for high temperature process chillers rate capacity with 35 degrees Celsius air for air-cooled units and 30 degrees Celsius water for water-cooled units. Ask for kilowatts at your leaving liquid temperature and your hottest day.
Process heat loadHeat load in kilowatts is mass flow times specific heat times temperature rise. One maker's worked example gives 49.6 kW for 2.36 litres a second and a 5 degree rise. Add margin for plant expansion.
Leaving liquid temperature and coolant mixCapacity changes with the set point. For low or high set points, a water and glycol mix, typically 10 to 50 percent, with a corrosion inhibitor, is recommended. State the coldest leaving temperature the unit must hold.
Condenser type and design ambient temperatureOne maker's manual says options such as a high ambient kit let a unit run at full load above 45 degrees Celsius, and that warm air recirculation raises condensing pressure and cuts capacity. State your hottest site temperature.
Compressor type and capacity controlScroll chillers step capacity up and down by switching compressors, while screw chillers can modulate with a slide vane. Ask the maker to state which control the unit has and what the lowest stable output is.
Number of refrigerant circuitsScroll chillers pipe their compressors over multiple refrigerant circuits, so the loss of one compressor cuts capacity but the chiller stays in service. Ask whether the unit has one circuit or more, and how much capacity remains on one.
Refrigerant, charge and warming potentialEU information sheets for process chillers list the refrigerant fluid and its global warming potential. Ask for the refrigerant name, the charge and the warming potential in writing on the data sheet.
Evaporator type, strainer and freeze protectionOne maker's manual asks for an inlet strainer with a mesh opening up to 0.87 mm for direct-expansion shell and tube, 1.0 mm for brazed plate and 1.2 mm for flooded evaporators, plus a flow switch and a freeze heater.
Pump, tank and loop pressureAn undersized pump cuts flow, and the process then runs above its set point. Hoses, fittings and height changes raise the pressure needed. Ask for pump flow and head at your own pipe layout, with pressure relief or a bypass.
Part-load efficiencyEU rules set minimum seasonal energy performance ratios for high temperature process chillers from 1 January 2021: 5.0 for air-cooled and 7.0 for water-cooled units under 400 kW. Ask for the seasonal figure, not only full load.
Controller, alarms and safety devicesLook for flow and level switches, thermal and pressure probes, crankcase heating, strainers and a phase sequence relay, with a controller that warns when readings drift and offers remote monitoring.
Foundation, clearance and noiseOne maker asks for a concrete base at least 250 mm thick and wider than the unit, on anti-vibration mounts, level within 5 mm for units up to 7 m long, with clear space so condenser air does not recirculate.
Documents delivered with the unitOne maker ships wiring diagrams, certified drawings, nameplate data and a declaration of conformity with every unit. Ask for these, plus the factory performance test report and the pressure test record of the refrigerant circuit.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for industrial chillers

Industrial chillers are classified under ITC-HS 84186990 (other), within HS subheading 841869 (refrigerating or freezing equipment; n.e.c. in heading no. 8418). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying industrial chillers right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying an industrial chiller in India

  • Check that the tax invoice carries the maker's own GSTIN and lists the chiller, pump, tank and control panel as separate lines with serial numbers, so warranty claims can be traced.
  • Prepare the base before delivery: a level concrete plinth wider than the unit, clear space on every side for condenser air, a three-phase supply with a suitable breaker and cable, and a water fill and drain point. For water-cooled units add the cooling tower and condenser water lines.
  • Make commissioning a written test at your site: leaving liquid temperature, flow, power draw and alarm trips checked against the data sheet and signed by both sides.
  • Train operators on the controller, alarm reset, strainer cleaning and the restart routine after a power cut. Keep the loop water clean, since dirt in the water fouls the evaporator and blocks the strainer.
  • Agree spares and service at order time: strainer elements, contactors, fan motors, pressure switches, filter driers and a refrigerant top-up kit, with a stated response time for a service visit and an annual maintenance contract.
  • Plan delivery: a crane or forklift to set the unit down, a route through gates and ceilings, and who connects the process pipes. Ask whether the unit ships fully charged with refrigerant or with a holding charge.

Buying from Indian industrial chiller exporters

  • For the European Union, the Commission's pressure equipment guidelines treat a refrigeration system as a pressure assembly, so ask the maker which conformity route the refrigerant circuit follows and for the list of pressure safety devices fitted.
  • Check the refrigerant against the importing region's rules before you order. The European Union limits certain fluorinated gases in chillers by size and by warming potential, so ask for the refrigerant, charge and warming potential on the data sheet.
  • For European process chillers, ask for the energy data the ecodesign rules need: seasonal efficiency, rated capacity at the standard rating point and refrigerant. Chillers that cool to lower temperatures can fall under a separate regulation.
  • Give the hottest air or condenser water temperature at site. For hot, coastal or desert sites ask for a high ambient selection and a coil cleaning routine for dust and salt.
  • State voltage, phase count and frequency in the order, because the compressor motors, fans, pump and panel are wired for them.
  • Settle the Incoterm and who arranges the Certificate of Origin, how the pump, tank and loose parts are crated, and whether spares kits and remote diagnostics go with the first unit.

Industrial Chiller: frequently asked questions

Who makes industrial chillers in India?

Maker names are not listed on diipl. Share the cooling capacity, leaving liquid temperature and site conditions you need. diipl matches you with a maker whose GSTIN is verified and whose factory has been audited, confirms its Importer Exporter Code and the approvals your market asks for, and introduces you for a meeting. For chillers the audit covers a loaded bench test, brazing and leak testing of the refrigerant circuit, and the safety devices.

Which capacity, set temperature and site details should I give when buying an industrial chiller?

Give the heat load in kilowatts or the flow and temperature rise, the leaving liquid temperature, water or glycol mix, the hottest site air or condenser water temperature, the power supply and the space available. Then ask for capacity at your own conditions, refrigerant, number of circuits, pump and tank, controller, safety devices and spares. Ask for capacity in writing, not only a model number.

Which standards or certifications apply to industrial chillers?

In India, BIS lists IS 16678 (Part 1) : 2018, which carries the ISO 5149-1 : 2014 number as well, for the definitions, classification and selection criteria of refrigerating systems and heat pumps. The compliance list on this page adds a BIS standard on the competence of people who work on refrigerating systems. These are not chiller product standards, so ask the maker which parts its design follows. For export, a European safety standard and two European regulations are listed on this page too.

What is the HSN code for industrial chillers?

Industrial Chillers are classified under ITC-HS 84186990 (other), within HS subheading 841869. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export industrial chillers?

Yes, if the unit carries the papers the importing region asks for. For the European Union, the Commission's guidelines on Directive 2014/68/EU treat a refrigeration system as a pressure assembly even where some pressure parts are excluded, and treat hermetically sealed refrigeration compressors as pressure vessels. Refrigerant rules, any ecodesign data and voltage must also match the buyer's region.

Which industries buy industrial chillers?

Plastic injection moulding plants use them to cool moulds. Pharmaceutical and food and beverage plants use them for process water, and chemical plants to hold reactions at temperature. Electronics makers, metal finishing shops, cold stores, machine shops and foundries also buy them, as do factories cooling their own air compressors. State the process first, because the loop temperature and fluid differ.

I manufacture industrial chillers. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl works out which plants need process cooling, such as moulding, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical units, and in which regions, then contacts them. Before any introduction it checks that each buyer has a genuine need, approved funds, a decision maker involved and a date to buy. Your company details stay off the website. Bring a loaded test report at rated capacity and the ambient range your units are built for, since buyers ask for both.

Should I choose an air-cooled or a water-cooled industrial chiller?

An air-cooled chiller is one packaged unit with no cooling tower, make-up water or condenser pumps, but it rejects heat to outdoor dry-bulb air and uses more energy. A water-cooled chiller rejects heat to water near the lower wet-bulb temperature and uses less energy, but needs a tower, pumps and water treatment. Compare the whole system, not the chiller alone.

Is a scroll or a screw chiller better for my process load?

Scroll chillers use several equal compressors on multiple circuits, so the loss of one compressor leaves partial cooling, but capacity is controlled in steps. Screw chillers are used for larger loads and a slide vane gives smooth output from 100 to 20 percent, with very good part-load efficiency, though they are generally louder. Pick scroll for modest loads and screw for large or changing ones.

How do I work out the chiller size for my process?

Multiply the water flow in litres per second by the temperature rise in degrees and by 4.2, the specific heat of water, to get kilowatts. One maker's example, 2.36 litres a second with a 5 degree rise, gives 49.6 kW. An undersized chiller cannot hold temperature and an oversized one runs inefficiently, so allow for expansion and for hot weather.

What routine maintenance does a process chiller need?

One maker's plan lists routine checks of operating data, flow switch operation, refrigerant leakage, water analysis, rinsing the condenser coils and combing damaged fins. It calls process cooling a critical application and asks for a stricter plan, which also applies to industrial, coastal and desert sites. Maintenance should be done by qualified technicians.
