What is a commercial welding machine?

An industrial welding machine supplies the electric power that melts and joins metal. In arc welding, a power source feeds current to an electrode, and the arc between the electrode and the work melts the joint. The electrode is a rod in manual metal arc and a wire in MIG/MAG and submerged arc, and it melts into the joint as filler. In TIG the electrode is a tungsten point and the filler is added separately. Gas or flux protects the molten pool. In resistance welding, a transformer drives heavy current through overlapping sheets pressed between copper electrodes, and the heat fuses a spot or a seam. Shops use these machines for frames, tanks, vessels, vehicle bodies and appliance parts.

This page covers industrial welding machines for fabrication shops and factories; hobby and home-workshop units are not covered.

How diipl verifies welding machine manufacturers

diipl checks every welding machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For welding machines, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A run at rated current and duty cycle on the factory floor, with a meter log of output current and voltage and a check of how hot the transformer or heat sink gets
  • The build of the winding, core and shunt in transformer units, or of the power board, heat sink and fan in inverter units, with an insulation resistance test and an earth continuity test
  • A trial weld on the buyer's own plate or wire, showing that the arc strikes, holds and restarts and that the current setting matches the dial or display
  • Wire feeder, drive rolls, gas solenoid and torch assembly on wire-fed machines, and head, carriage and flux recovery on submerged arc sets, tested together on a trial run
  • For spot and seam welders, the arm and frame build, the cooling water circuit and the weld controller, tested with peel or chisel checks on trial sheets

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of welding machines we cover

Indian welding machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Manual metal arc (stick) welding machineMaintenance and repair workshops, small fabrication shops and site erection crews
MIG/MAG (gas metal arc) welding machineFabricators and equipment makers running steady production on frames and structures
TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding machineMakers of stainless steel and aluminium equipment, and pipe and vessel shops
Resistance spot welding machineMakers of vehicle parts, appliances, metal furniture and electronic products
Resistance seam welding machineMakers of tanks, drums, cans, ductwork and exhaust parts
Submerged arc welding machineBoiler, pressure vessel, pipe and heavy structure fabricators

Manual metal arc (stick) welding machine

The welder holds an electrode holder and moves the electrode by hand, so the operator controls the process. The source gives a drooping, constant current. The process needs a high current of 50 to 300 A at a low voltage of 10 to 50 V. Power sources are transformer, rectifier or inverter types; an inverter works at typically 50 kHz and is valued for its size and weight. Choose it for repair, site and simple fabrication work.

MIG/MAG (gas metal arc) welding machine

A power source with a flat voltage characteristic, a wire feeder and a gun. In this semi-automatic form the wire is fed through a gun that the operator guides by hand, and the wire feed speed sets the current. A shielding gas from a cylinder protects the pool, and the machine suits steady production work on frames and structures. Choose it when deposition rate and flexibility matter.

TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding machine

The welder holds a torch with a tungsten electrode while shielding gas covers the pool. The source gives a drooping, constant current, in DC or AC output. AC must be used for aluminium, and transistor and inverter sources are used increasingly. The arc is usually started by high frequency sparks, with lift arc as the non high frequency option; high frequency is preferred for high quality work. Choose it where weld quality matters more than speed.

Resistance spot welding machine

Two electrodes press overlapping sheets while heavy current fuses a spot. Force usually comes from a cylinder, and the current and weld time are set on the machine. One maker builds pedestal machines in horn style and platen style, in AC and MFDC versions, from 30 to 170 kVA, with throat depths from 18 to 36 inches. Choose it for sheet metal parts made in volume.

Resistance seam welding machine

A seam welder uses rotating wheel electrodes to press overlapping metal parts and pass current. Circular seam welders weld around round parts, and longitudinal seam welders weld straight seams along a part. Power supplies come in AC and MFDC forms, and the frames are heavy welded steel. Work includes fuel tanks, drums, cans, ductwork and filter housings. Choose it where a seam must be continuous.

Submerged arc welding machine

A bare wire runs into an arc under a layer of flux. The head, with its wire feeder and flux delivery, is mounted on a rail, tractor or boom, so the process is mechanised. Single wire current runs from as low as 200 A on 1.6 mm wire up to 1000 A, and twin wire systems run from 800 to 1200 A. Unused flux is vacuumed back to the hopper. Choose it for long seams in thick plate.

What to specify when buying a welding machine

A clear welding machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Welding process or processes you needStick, MIG/MAG, TIG, spot, seam and submerged arc machines are different designs. State the process, the metals and the joints before you ask for a rating, so the maker proposes the right machine.
Rated current and the duty cycle at which it is givenDuty cycle is the share of ten minutes a machine runs at a stated current. One 500 A machine is rated 310 A at 100 percent, 400 A at 60 percent and 500 A at 35 percent (40 degrees C).
Current range and no-load voltage for your electrode sizesManual metal arc needs 50 to 300 A at 10 to 50 V. The source must limit its no-load voltage, and in confined spaces a low voltage safety device keeps the holder below 48 V rms.
Supply voltage, phases and input kVARead the rating plate. One 400 A transformer is listed for three phase, 415 V, 50 Hz, with 19 kVA input at full duty cycle, an 80 A switch fuse and a 10 kVAR power factor capacitor.
Wire feeder speed range, drive rolls and spool size (MIG/MAG)Wire feed speed sets the welding current. One maker's range lists 1.5 to 18 metres per minute, solid wire sizes of 0.8 to 1.6 mm, two or four drive rolls and 15 kg spools.
Shielding gas supply and flow controlMIG/MAG and TIG need a gas cylinder with a pressure reducing valve and flow meter, and a solenoid valve in the machine. Draughts from open doors can blow the gas away, so plan how the shop will protect the arc.
Torch type and coolingWater-cooled torches carry high current at full duty cycle. One maker lists water-cooled MIG/MAG torches rated at 100 percent duty cycle from 250 A up to 700 A. Ask which torch and cooling unit come with the machine.
TIG output type and arc startingDC output puts most heat in the work, and AC is needed for aluminium. The arc is usually started by high frequency sparks, with lift arc as the non high frequency option. Ask which starts and outputs the machine offers.
Spot welder kVA rating, duty cycle and throat depthCompare kVA at the same duty cycle: 100 kVA at 50 percent can read 141 kVA at 25 percent. On the same machine, a 12 inch throat gives more current than a 36 inch throat.
Electrode force, cylinder size and cooling waterToo much force can give a cold weld, and low force can cause expulsion. An oversized cylinder cannot follow up to forge the joint. Water cooling keeps tip life long; keep the water temperature above the dew point.
Submerged arc current and wire sizeSingle wire current runs from as low as 200 A on 1.6 mm wire up to 1000 A; twin wire systems run from 800 to 1200 A. Match the rating to your plate thickness and deposition need.
Submerged arc head, carriage and flux recoveryThe head rides on a tractor or boom. One 1200 A set lists wire feed of 0.5 to 4.0 metres per minute and carriage speed of 0.1 to 1.5 metres per minute. Ask about the flux hopper and recovery.
Protection class and supply fault cut-outsAsk for the degree of protection, the insulation class and the cut-outs for low voltage, high voltage, phase loss and overheating. One maker lists IP23(S), insulation class H and cut-outs below 340 and above 470 V AC.
Safety standard the resistance welder followsIEC 62135-1 sets electrical safety requirements for design, manufacture and installation of resistance welding equipment, stationary or portable. It does not cover all non-electrical hazards such as noise and vibration, so ask how those are handled.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for welding machines

The code for welding machines depends on whether the machine welds by resistance or by an electric arc, and whether it is fully or partly automatic or worked by hand. Choose the line that matches your machine:

  • 85152110 (automatic spot welding machinery) when the machine is a resistance welder that runs an automatic spot welding cycle.
  • 85152190 (other, within subheading 851521: welding machines and apparatus; for resistance welding of metal, fully or partly automatic, whether or not capable of cutting) when the machine is another fully or partly automatic resistance welder that is not named as an automatic spot or butt welding machine.
  • 85152900 (other, within subheading 851529: welding machines and apparatus; for resistance welding of metal, other than fully or partly automatic, whether or not capable of cutting) when the machine is a resistance welder with no automatic cycle.
  • 85153100 (fully or partly automatic) when the machine is an arc welder that is fully or partly automatic, for example a mechanised submerged arc unit, an orbital head unit or a robot welding cell.
  • 85153910 (ac arc welding machinery) when the machine is a hand worked arc welder named in the tariff as AC arc welding machinery.
  • 85153920 (argon arc welding machinery) when the machine is a hand worked arc welder named in the tariff as argon arc welding machinery.
  • 85153990 (other, within subheading 851539: welding machines and apparatus; for arc (including plasma arc) welding of metals, other than fully or partly automatic, whether or not capable of cutting) when the machine is any other arc welder worked by hand.

Every machine on this page is an electric welding machine. The tariff first separates resistance welding from arc welding, and then separates fully or partly automatic machines from the rest. A stick set worked by hand is not automatic. An arc welder whose head travels along the seam on a rail, tractor or boom is mechanised, which points to the fully or partly automatic subheading. No official text found says how much automation makes a machine partly automatic. Rulings from customs authorities abroad place hand worked sets, including inverter sets with a wire feeder, in the other arc welding subheading, but one placed a computerised semi automatic stud welder in the fully or partly automatic subheading, so a wire feed set, a spot welder or a seam welder is not settled by any one branch and depends on the machine as built. A bare power source sold without its holder and cable is a static converter and may fall outside this heading.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying welding machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a welding machine in India

  • Check that the GST invoice names the machine type, the rated current and the serial number, and that the GSTIN on it belongs to the maker.
  • Put commissioning in the contract: cable size and switch fuse for the supply, earthing, a gas manifold or cylinder rack, a water chiller for water-cooled torches and spot welders, and a trial weld on your own material before you sign off.
  • Check the plant supply against the rating plate for voltage, phases and frequency, and ask for cut-outs for low voltage and phase loss. Ask whether a power factor capacitor is advised for the machine.
  • Book training for operators and setters on the process, the settings chart, electrode or wire choice and safe use, including fume extraction and protective gear for the welder.
  • Agree a spares list for parts that wear, such as contact tips, nozzles, drive rolls, electrode holders, torch liners and spot welding tips, and ask how fast a service engineer can reach your plant.
  • For submerged arc sets and press-type spot welders, prepare the floor, the rails or the boom base to the maker's drawing, and plan a crane for delivery.

Buying from Indian welding machine exporters

  • Buyers in the European Union ask for CE marking, which can only be put on after testing and a conformity assessment. The maker should name the arc welding standard its design follows for electrical safety and for radio interference. Resistance welders have their own electrical safety standard.
  • For the Gulf region, the regional standards body publishes an adoption of the arc welding power source standard. Ask which edition the buyer's authority expects, and have the maker name the edition the machine was tested to.
  • For a buyer whose plant follows the OSHA workplace rule on resistance welding, guarding at the point of operation, guarded foot switches and a grounded transformer secondary (where technically practical) are covered. Ask the maker to show these features on the machine.
  • Tell the maker your voltage, phases and frequency and your room temperature range. A welding machine's rated current is given at a stated test temperature, so ask for the rating at your site conditions.
  • Agree who supplies gas regulators, hoses, torch consumables and flux in the destination region, and ask for a first spares kit of contact tips, nozzles, drive rolls and welding tips.
  • Fix the Incoterm in the contract and ask whether your import rules need a Certificate of Origin. Have heavy parts such as the transformer, the boom and the control cabinet packed and listed separately for sea freight, with remote support by video call.

Welding Machine: frequently asked questions

Who makes welding machines in India?

diipl does not publish maker names. Share the process, the current rating, your supply and the plates you weld. diipl then picks a manufacturer whose GSTIN is verified and whose factory has been audited, checks its export registration and the certificates your market asks for, and introduces you for a meeting in person or online. For welding machines the factory audit includes a run at rated current and a trial weld on your material.

Which current rating should I ask for in an industrial welding machine?

Start from the electrode or wire size and the thickest plate you weld, then add the shifts you run. For manual metal arc, the process needs 50 to 300 A at 10 to 50 V. Ask for the rating at your duty cycle, not only the peak figure, and check the supply and the cut-outs for low voltage and phase loss before you place the order.

Which standards or certifications apply to welding machines?

The Indian standard for arc welding power sources is IS 16593 (Part 1):2024. BIS lists it as identical under dual numbering to IEC 60974-1:2021, and it supersedes the 2021 edition. BIS also lists an older series for resistance welding equipment, shown in the Indian compliance list on this page. Export rules for the European Union and North America are under export compliance. Ask the maker which standard each machine is built and tested to.

What is the HSN code for welding machines?

The code for welding machines depends on whether the machine welds by resistance or by an electric arc, and whether it is fully or partly automatic or worked by hand: 85152110 when the machine is a resistance welder that runs an automatic spot welding cycle; 85152190 when the machine is another fully or partly automatic resistance welder that is not named as an automatic spot or butt welding machine; 85152900 when the machine is a resistance welder with no automatic cycle; 85153100 when the machine is an arc welder that is fully or partly automatic, for example a mechanised submerged arc unit, an orbital head unit or a robot welding cell; 85153910 when the machine is a hand worked arc welder named in the tariff as AC arc welding machinery; 85153920 when the machine is a hand worked arc welder named in the tariff as argon arc welding machinery; 85153990 when the machine is any other arc welder worked by hand. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.

Can Indian manufacturers export welding machines?

Yes. The machine has to meet the rules of the buyer's region. In the European Union, electrical equipment with an input or output of 50 to 1000 V AC or 75 to 1500 V DC falls under the Low Voltage Directive, and CE marking can only be put on after testing and the conformity assessment. Buyers also match the supply, spares and Incoterm.

Which industries buy welding machines?

Submerged arc sets weld pressure vessels such as boilers, structural frames, pipes, earth-moving tools and ships, and they are also used to repair machine parts. MIG/MAG, TIG and manual arc machines serve the same plants and many smaller fabrication shops. Spot and seam welders serve vehicle, appliance, furniture, tank and drum makers.

I manufacture welding machines. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl studies which fabrication shops, vessel makers, vehicle part suppliers and appliance makers need your process and current class, and in which regions, then runs outreach. Each buyer is screened for a real requirement, funds, the authority to sign and a purchase date before a meeting is set up with you. For welding machines diipl also notes the process, the current rating and the supply each buyer needs, so you meet buyers your range can serve. Your company name and contacts stay off every public page.

Should I buy a MIG/MAG, TIG or manual metal arc welding machine?

MIG/MAG accounts for more than 50 percent of all weld metal deposited, and it offers better flexibility, deposition rates and suitability for mechanisation than manual metal arc, but it needs a high degree of manipulative skill from the welder. Manual metal arc suits repair and site work with simple equipment. TIG suits work where weld quality matters more than speed. Many shops buy more than one type.

What does duty cycle mean when I compare welding machines?

Duty cycle is the share of a ten minute period that a machine can run at a stated current. One maker's 500 A TIG and manual arc machine gives 310 A at 100 percent duty cycle, 400 A at 60 percent and 500 A at 35 percent, measured at 40 degrees C. A machine sold by its peak current may not hold that current for a full shift, so compare ratings at your own duty cycle.

When does a shop need a submerged arc welding machine?

Submerged arc suits long longitudinal and circumferential butt and fillet welds, mostly in the flat position, with virtually no limit on plate thickness if the joint is prepared for it. The arc runs under a flux layer, so no shielding gas is needed. It is usually mechanised or automatic, and current can reach 2000 A with fused flux. For small parts or awkward positions, MIG/MAG or manual arc is the usual choice.

What power supply does an industrial welding machine need?

Read the rating plate and match it to your plant. One maker's 400 A transformer is listed for a three phase, 415 V, 50 Hz supply, needs 19 kVA at full duty cycle, and recommends an 80 A switch fuse and a 10 kVAR capacitor for power factor. Size the cable and fuse to the maker's figures, and ask for cut-outs for low voltage and phase loss.
