What is a commercial boring machine?
A boring machine enlarges a hole that is already drilled or cast and finishes it to size with a single-point tool on a rotating boring bar. In a horizontal boring machine the spindle lies on its side and slides out of the headstock to reach deep bores. Some machines add a ram that also travels in and out. A facing head on the spindle cuts flat faces around the bore. The part sits on a rotary table that moves, or stays on the floor while the column travels. Line boring brings bores that sit far apart into line with each other. Cylinder boring machines work on engine blocks.
This page covers commercial and industrial boring machines that finish bores in heavy parts and engine blocks; tunnel boring machines, water-well and directional drilling rigs, and home-workshop machines are not covered.
How diipl verifies boring machine manufacturers
diipl checks every boring machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For boring machines, the capacity audit also covers:
- A test cut on a bore in a part like yours, at the diameter and depth you need, with size, roundness and straightness measured and written down; for cylinder and line boring machines, the centring, clamping and head feed shown on a real engine block or test piece
- Accuracy checks of the machine itself against the test charts of the national or international test series for horizontal boring machines, with laser calibration records for the long axes
- The spindle, ram and headstock run through the full speed range under load, checked for noise, heat build-up and sag at full extension
- The builder's own large machining capacity for the bed, column and table, and how the cast or welded structure is stress relieved before machining
- Rotary table indexing and clamping checked at every position, and the hydraulic, lubrication and electrical systems run for leaks and faults
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of boring machines we cover
Indian boring machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Conventional table-type horizontal boring machine | Machine shops and repair shops cutting one-off bores in medium-sized parts |
| CNC table-type horizontal boring and milling machine | Manufacturers and machine shops that bore several faces of medium to large parts in one setup |
| CNC floor-type ram horizontal boring and milling machine | Shops that machine parts too large for a rotary table |
| Portable line boring machine | Repair crews working on excavator booms and buckets, turbine bearing seats, hydraulic cylinder eyes and press hinge points |
| Cylinder boring machine for engine blocks | Engine rebuilding and reconditioning shops working on car and light truck engines |
Conventional table-type horizontal boring machine
The part sits on a rotary table. Positions are read from scales and verniers, and speeds and feeds come in fixed steps. One Indian maker lists a table-type model in its conventional range with an 80 mm work spindle, a rotary table clamping surface of 900 by 1120 mm and a maximum workpiece weight of 2000 kg. Choose it for shops that cut one-off bores and do not need programmed cycles.
CNC table-type horizontal boring and milling machine
A numerically controlled version with a CNC controller, ball screws and linear guideways on the axes, and a rotary table that turns through 360 degrees. One Indian series lists boring spindles of 110, 130 and 160 mm, table loads of 6000 to 12000 kg, positioning accuracy of 0.02 mm and an optional tool changer with 30 or 40 tools. Choose it for repeat work and several faces in one setup.
CNC floor-type ram horizontal boring and milling machine
The column runs along the X-axis, and the ram and the boring spindle each have their own travel. One Indian CNC series lists spindles of 110, 130 and 160 mm, column travel of 3000 to 20000 mm, ram travel of 700 to 800 mm and real-time sag compensation. An optional rotary table takes loads of 6000 to 10000 kg. Choose it when the part is too long or heavy for a table.
Portable line boring machine
The machine is mounted on the component and works in place, without taking it apart. A single-point cutter on a rotating bar enlarges an existing bore and corrects its geometry. One maker's modular unit works on bores of 22 to 250 mm, with an electric drive of 1.8 kW or a hydraulic drive of 5.5 kW, and the bar is centred on the true axis with a dial indicator. Choose it for repairs where moving the part is hard.
Cylinder boring machine for engine blocks
The block is centred and clamped, then a boring head cuts each cylinder. One maker's model for engine blocks of cars and light trucks bores 31 to 160 mm to a depth of 460 mm, with variable spindle speed up to 500 rpm, an infeed control and automatic head feed. It weighs about 1600 kg, and the maker's page lists no CNC control. Choose it for engine rebuilding shops.
What to specify when buying a boring machine
A clear boring machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Boring spindle diameter and taper | Spindle size sets reach and rigidity. One maker lists floor-type boring spindles of 130 to 200 mm and T-type table machines of 130 to 180 mm. Name the bores you must cut and the deepest reach you need before you choose. |
| Travel on each axis: column, saddle, ram and boring spindle | One maker's floor-type ram range lists column travel of 5000 to 21000 mm and a ram plus spindle stroke of 1400 mm on one series, and 2250 mm on its longer-ram series. Check these against your longest part and deepest bore. |
| Rotary table size and load rating (table-type machines) | One Indian CNC table-type series lists rotary tables from 1400 by 1600 mm to 1800 by 2000 mm, rated for 6000 to 12000 kg, with 360 degree rotation. Add the weight of fixtures to the weight of the part. |
| Largest and heaviest part, with fixtures | Check the biggest part size and its weight, including fixtures, against the table load rating and clamping access. Real reach under cutting load matters more than the travel figure alone. |
| Control level: manual, numerical control or CNC | The ISO safety standard for milling machines that also bore separates manually operated boring and milling machines without numerical control, those with limited numerical control, and numerically controlled milling machines. State which axes, including the rotary table, are numerically controlled. |
| Positioning accuracy and repeatability | One Indian CNC table-type series lists positioning accuracy of 0.02 mm and repeatability of 0.01 mm on its linear axes, with laser calibration on all linear axes. Ask for the same figures and records for the machine you buy. |
| Accuracy test standard | ISO 3070 is the international test series for horizontal spindle boring and milling machines. Its floor-type part, ISO 3070-2:2016, sets geometric, spindle and positioning tests. It checks accuracy only, not speeds, feeds, vibration or noise. Ask which part applies to your machine. |
| Spindle speed range and drive power | One Indian CNC series lists spindle speeds of 0 to 2500 rpm with 22, 28 and 37 kW spindle power for 110, 130 and 160 mm spindles. Ask for torque at the speeds you will really cut, not only the top speed. |
| Ram and spindle sag compensation (long-reach machines) | The ram and boring spindle sag as they extend. One ram-type series applies real-time sag compensation for ram and spindle travel, which its maker says helps minimise the error. Ask whether your machine has it and how it is proved. |
| Facing head and largest facing diameter | A facing head on the spindle cuts flat faces around the bore. One Indian CNC series lists an optional facing head of 630 or 800 mm diameter, with a largest facing diameter of 1000 or 1200 mm and 200 mm of radial slide travel. |
| Tool changer, touch probe and coolant options | One Indian CNC series offers an optional automatic tool changer with 30 or 40 tools and a 15 second tool change, plus an auto touch probe, coolant through the spindle and a chip conveyor. Decide which you need for repeat jobs. |
| Foundation, floor space and machine weight | One Indian CNC series lists machine weights of 28000 to 42000 kg and a connected load of 60 to 90 kVA, and supplies levelling pads and foundation bolts. Get the foundation drawing and the weight of each piece before you order. |
| Bore range and depth (cylinder boring machine) | One cylinder boring machine for car and light truck engine blocks bores 31 to 160 mm to a depth of 460 mm, with spindle speed of 0 to 500 rpm and automatic head feed. Match this to your largest cylinder and block depth. |
| Bore range and bar support (portable line boring) | One portable model works on bores of 22 to 250 mm, with line boring from 42 to 250 mm using 20 and 40 mm bars. An undersized bar or wide support spacing causes taper and vibration, so use the largest bar the bore allows with supports close to the cut. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for boring machines
The code for boring machines depends on whether the machine is a horizontal boring and milling machine or one that only bores, whether it has numerical control, and whether it has an automatic tool changer. Choose the line that matches your machine:
- 84593990 (other, within subheading 845939: machine-tools; for boring-milling by removing metal, other than numerically controlled) when the horizontal machine is built and sold to bore and mill and is not numerically controlled.
- 84593100 (numerically controlled) when the horizontal boring and milling machine is numerically controlled and has no automatic tool changer.
- 84571010 (horizontal) when the horizontal boring and milling machine is numerically controlled and has an automatic tool changer working from a tool magazine, which makes it a machining centre.
- 84594990 (other, within subheading 845949: machine-tools; for boring by removing metal, not numerically controlled boring machines, n.e.c. in heading 8459) when the machine only bores, is not numerically controlled and is neither a jig boring nor a fine boring machine, such as a portable line boring machine or an engine block boring machine.
A boring and milling machine without numerical control goes to the other boring milling machines subheading. With numerical control it goes to the numerically controlled line, unless it has an automatic tool changer working from a tool magazine, which makes it a machining centre in a different heading. A machine that only bores, such as a portable line boring machine or an engine block boring machine, goes to the other boring machines subheading. Whether a plain horizontal boring machine counts as a boring and milling machine is not settled by any official text we found.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.
A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying boring machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a boring machine in India
- Ask for a GST invoice that names the machine type, model and control, and lists the facing head, boring bars, boring stay, tool holders and rotary table that come with it, so every accessory you paid for is on paper.
- Plan the foundation before the order: the maker should give a foundation drawing with anchor bolt positions and levelling points, and a floor-type machine also needs rails or floor plates and a long, dedicated stretch of floor.
- Put installation, levelling and commissioning in the contract, with an acceptance run at your site: a test cut on a bore of your own and the accuracy checks from the Indian test series for horizontal boring machines.
- Book operator training for the person who sets tools and reads the scales or runs the controller, and for maintenance staff who look after lubrication, hydraulics and the rotary table clamp.
- Agree spares and service: keep spare bearings, seals, hoses, lubrication parts and cutting inserts on hand, and fix a response time for a service visit and for any spindle repair.
- Heavy delivery needs planning: ask for the weight of each piece, the crane and truck you will need, and the lead time from order to dispatch before you book the foundation work.
Buying from Indian boring machine exporters
- Under the Machinery Regulation, which is replacing the older Machinery Directive, a boring machine is not on the higher-risk lists in Annex I, but it still needs CE marking, an EU declaration of conformity and instructions for use. Ask how the rotary table, moving column, facing head and tool changer are guarded, and which safety standard the design follows.
- For North America, ask the buyer's safety team whether the American national safety standard for manual milling, drilling and boring machines applies. Its scope leaves out numerically controlled machines whose manual control is only used to set up the machine for automatic production, so say clearly whether your model is manual or CNC.
- Give your site voltage, phases and frequency in words so the spindle motor, drives and control cabinet are built to match, and ask for the electrical drawings.
- Large machines travel in sections. Ask for a packing list showing the bed, column, headstock, ram, table and electrical cabinet piece by piece with weights, and agree who assembles, levels and aligns the machine at your site.
- Before dispatch, ask for a witnessed test cut on a bore like yours, by video or in person, and the accuracy test report against the international test series for horizontal boring machines.
- Agree the Incoterm, who unloads and lifts the machine, and whether a Certificate of Origin is needed; also agree remote support for the controller and a spare parts list.

Boring Machine: frequently asked questions
Who makes boring machines in India?
Maker names are not published on this page. Describe the job to diipl: table-type or floor-type, manual or CNC, or a cylinder or portable line boring machine, plus the largest part, the bore sizes and the accuracy you need. diipl then matches a builder whose GSTIN is verified and whose factory has been audited for capacity, and checks its Importer Exporter Code and export papers. For a boring machine the audit includes a test cut on a bore like yours. Then the first meeting is set up.
Which spindle size, travels and table load should I specify?
Work backwards from your largest part and deepest bore. Ask for the part size and weight with fixtures, the bore diameter and depth, the spindle size that gives the reach, the travel on each axis, the rotary table size and load, and the control level. For example, one Indian CNC table-type series lists spindles of 110 to 160 mm and table loads of 6000 to 12000 kg. Do not choose on travel alone: check the real reach with the tool extended.
Which standards or certifications apply to boring machines?
Accuracy is checked against IS 11958, the Indian test series for horizontal spindle boring and milling machines, which is identical under dual numbering with ISO 3070: Part 1 for fixed column and movable table, Part 2 for floor type, Part 3 for movable column and movable table. Electrical equipment can follow IS 16504 (Part 1):2019. For export, buyers in the European Union look for CE marking, and ISO 16090-1 sets safety requirements for milling machines, including those that bore. diipl checks the certificates your market asks for.
What is the HSN code for boring machines?
The code for boring machines depends on whether the machine is a horizontal boring and milling machine or one that only bores, whether it has numerical control, and whether it has an automatic tool changer: 84593990 when the horizontal machine is built and sold to bore and mill and is not numerically controlled; 84593100 when the horizontal boring and milling machine is numerically controlled and has no automatic tool changer; 84571010 when the horizontal boring and milling machine is numerically controlled and has an automatic tool changer working from a tool magazine, which makes it a machining centre; 84594990 when the machine only bores, is not numerically controlled and is neither a jig boring nor a fine boring machine, such as a portable line boring machine or an engine block boring machine. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.
Can Indian manufacturers export boring machines?
Yes, if the machine meets the buyer's region. Overseas buyers usually ask for CE marking, a declaration of conformity and instructions for the European Union, an answer on the safety standard for North America, a match to their voltage and frequency, a packing list with weights, a witnessed test cut and remote help with the controller. Demand for Indian capital goods is described as growing in South-East Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Which industries buy boring machines?
Makers of large castings and heavy fabrications, pump, compressor and valve body makers, power equipment makers who machine turbine casings and generator frames, earthmoving and crane equipment makers, gearbox housing makers and shipyards buy table-type and floor-type machines. Engine reconditioning shops buy cylinder boring machines, and heavy equipment repair crews use portable line boring machines.
I make boring machines. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl sorts buyers by the kind of machine they need, because a heavy fabricator, an engine rebuilder and a repair crew buy very different boring machines. It then researches which industries and regions need your type, reaches out to them, and checks that each buyer has a real job, a budget, a decision maker and a date. Introductions follow as meetings with you. Your company details stay off any public page.
Table-type or floor-type: which horizontal boring machine suits my parts?
Floor-type machines suit parts too large, too heavy or too irregular to sit on a table: the column runs on rails set into the floor, with column travel of 4000 to 40000 mm in one maker's range. Table-type machines turn the part on a rotary table to reach several faces in one setup, with table loads of 15 to 60 tons in the same maker's T-type range and a more contained working envelope. Choose floor-type for the biggest, heaviest parts.
How does cylinder boring differ from boring the main bearing bores of an engine block?
Cylinder boring enlarges the cylinders of an engine block so that an oversize piston can be fitted. Rebuilders bore as far as the block allows, using the standard oversize piston steps, and treat a sleeve as the last option. The bore is then finished by honing. Align boring works on the main bearing bores that carry the crankshaft and brings bores that have shifted back in line with each other. Both need a rigid machine and careful setup.
How is the accuracy of a horizontal boring machine tested?
ISO 3070 sets out geometric tests, spindle or machining tests and, for numerically controlled machines, positioning accuracy and repeatability tests, with tolerances for general-purpose, normal-accuracy machines. It covers accuracy only: vibration, noise, speeds and feeds are not part of it. Ask the maker for the test report on the machine you will receive, and for a test cut on a part like yours.
Should I take the part to a shop machine or use a portable line boring machine?
A shop machine such as a boring mill gives the most rigidity and material-removal capacity, but the part must travel to it. A portable line boring machine is mounted on the component and works in place, which makes sense when stripping down or moving the part would take longer than the machining. One maker's portable model covers bores of 22 to 250 mm. Centre the bar on the true axis with a dial indicator.
