What is a commercial milling machine?
A milling machine removes metal by feeding a clamped part against a revolving cutter. The operator moves the table left and right, front and back, and up and down, by hand wheels or by power feed. In a vertical machine the spindle stands upright and the cutter works on the top face. In a horizontal machine the spindle lies sideways, the cutter sits on an arbor, and heavy box-shaped parts can be cut on their side faces. On a knee-type machine the table rides on a saddle, the saddle on a knee, and the knee slides up and down the column. On a bed-type machine the table is carried directly on a heavy bed, with the column behind it.
This page covers commercial and industrial hand-operated milling machines for tool rooms, job shops and workshops; road milling machines, dental and jewellery milling units, numerically controlled machines and hobby bench mills are not covered.
How diipl verifies milling machine manufacturers
diipl checks every milling machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For milling machines, the capacity audit also covers:
- A test cut on a steel block at the rated table load, with the milled faces checked for flatness and squareness against a surface plate and a dial gauge
- Table, saddle and knee movement on every axis, with backlash at the hand wheels, the fit of the slideways and gibs, and the power feed and rapid traverse run through their range
- Spindle run-out, noise and heat through the full speed range, and every speed change by gearbox or belt, with the clutches engaging cleanly
- The maker's own capacity to machine and finish the column, knee, saddle and table slideways, and how the castings are aged before machining
- Lubrication, coolant pump, limit stops, emergency stop and guards working, and a signed final inspection record before dispatch
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of milling machines we cover
Indian milling machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Vertical knee-type milling machine | Tool rooms, job shops and maintenance workshops |
| Turret (ram-type) vertical milling machine | Tool rooms, job shops and training workshops |
| Horizontal knee-type milling machine | Shops that machine heavy box-shaped parts with side-face features |
| Universal knee-type milling machine | Gear, die and keyway shops, tool rooms and training workshops |
| Universal swivel-head milling machine | Workshops that need horizontal and vertical milling on one machine |
| Bed-type milling machine | Shops that take heavy cuts or repeat production on larger parts |
Vertical knee-type milling machine
The spindle stands upright and the head swivels for angled cuts. It suits flat faces, slots and drilling. One Indian vertical knee-type range lists tables of 1320 by 320 and 1500 by 360 mm, an ISO 50 spindle taper, twelve speeds from 58 to 1710 rpm, a 4 kW spindle motor, a head swivel of 35 degrees either way and table loads of 300 kg. This page covers hand-operated machines with power feeds and no programmed axes.
Turret (ram-type) vertical milling machine
The head is carried on a ram, and the machine is sold as a ram turret type. One Indian range lists tables from 975 by 220 to 1700 by 365 mm, ram travel from 250 to 440 mm, eight spindle speeds from 75 to 3000 rpm and net weights from 1050 to 2400 kg. This page covers hand-operated turret machines, not programmed ones.
Horizontal knee-type milling machine
The spindle lies sideways and is hollow so that a drawbar can hold the arbor firmly. Cutters are fitted on the arbor, and the table, saddle and knee move as on a vertical machine. Horizontal machines suit heavy box-shaped parts with features on the side faces. On a plain horizontal machine the table does not swivel; a swivelling table makes it a universal machine. This page covers hand-operated machines with power feed.
Universal knee-type milling machine
A swivelling table can be set at an angle, which allows angular, helical and spiral milling and makes the machine similar to a horizontal one. It is used for gear cutting, tool and die work, slot and keyway cutting and flat surfaces. One Indian range lists a horizontal ISO 50 spindle, tables of 1250 by 360 mm and a main motor of four kilowatts. This page covers hand-operated machines with power feed.
Universal swivel-head milling machine
One machine carries both a horizontal spindle and a vertical head that swivels through 360 degrees. One Indian range lists tables from 1120 by 260 to 1650 by 360 mm, an ISO 40 or ISO 50 spindle taper, and separate gearboxes for the horizontal and the vertical speeds. The maker's photos show a control panel with a digital readout. This page covers hand-operated machines only.
Bed-type milling machine
The table is supported directly on a heavy bed, with the column placed behind the bed. The heavier build allows more power at the spindle and gives higher productivity through faster metal removal, but the machine is less versatile for small parts. Numerically controlled bed-type machines belong to the CNC machines page; this page covers hand-operated ones only.
What to specify when buying a milling machine
A clear milling machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Clamping area, T-slots and table swivel | One Indian all-geared range lists tables from 1350 by 300 to 2300 by 500 mm, with a 45 degree swivel on its three smaller models and a fixed table on the two largest. Match the table to your biggest part. |
| Travel on the longitudinal, cross and vertical axes | One Indian knee-type range lists longitudinal travel from 800 to 1200 mm, cross travel from 265 to 320 mm and vertical travel from 375 to 425 mm, with power feed. Compare them with your longest cut and tallest part. |
| Maximum safe table load | Add the weight of the vice or fixture to the part. One Indian all-geared range lists table loads from 350 kg on its smallest model to 2500 kg on its largest. |
| Spindle taper and the holders you already own | Models come with ISO 40 or ISO 50 tapers. One range has an ISO 50 horizontal spindle on a 1250 by 360 mm table and an ISO 40 vertical one on a 1000 by 360 mm table. Match your holders. |
| Spindle nose standard | IS 6681:1972, reaffirmed in November 2023, gives dimensions of self-release 7/24 tapers for spindle noses for milling machines. Ask the maker which size and which standard the spindle nose follows. |
| Spindle speed range and number of speeds | One Indian knee-type range offers 18 speeds, from 35.5 or 25.5 rpm at the low end to 1800 rpm. Ask for the full speed chart and check that it covers the cutters and materials you use. |
| Spindle motor and feed motor | One Indian all-geared range lists spindle motors from 3 to 10 hp and feed motors of 2 and 3 hp, with separate drives for the spindle and for the table feeds. Ask for both ratings, not only the spindle. |
| Table feeds and rapid traverse | One Indian knee-type range lists cutting feeds from 22 to 555 mm per minute on the longitudinal and cross axes, and rapid traverse up to 1290 mm per minute. Ask for the feed chart of every axis. |
| Head swivel and spindle nose to table distance | One Indian knee-type range lists a spindle swivel of 35 degrees either way and a spindle nose to table distance of up to 440 mm. A swivelling head allows angled cuts; check the gap against your tallest part. |
| Ram travel on turret machines | One Indian range of ram turret machines lists ram travel from 250 to 440 mm, with table sizes from 975 by 220 to 1700 by 365 mm. Ram reach decides how far the cutter can be set over the part. |
| Table, load and spindle-to-column distance on bed-type machines | One Indian bed-type range lists tables from 1525 by 320 to 2100 by 500 mm, loads from 500 to 2000 kg and a spindle axis to column distance of 450 to 610 mm. Check them against your largest part. |
| Control level and digital readout | This page covers hand-operated machines with power feed. One Indian range lists a three-axis digital readout as an optional accessory, so say in the order whether you want one. Programmed axes belong to the CNC machines page. |
| Machine weight, packing case and floor load | One Indian knee-type range lists net weights from 2400 to 3700 kg and packing cases up to 260 by 245 by 230 cm. Get the weight and size of each case before you plan the floor, crane and transport. |
| Accuracy test report | The ISO 1701 series covers geometric and machining tests for general-purpose, normal-accuracy milling machines with a table of variable height. It checks accuracy only, not vibration, noise, speeds or feeds. Ask for the test chart of your machine. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for milling machines
The code for milling machines depends on whether the milling machine is a knee type or a bed type machine, and whether its spindle is horizontal, vertical, universal or carried on a ram. Choose the line that matches your machine:
- 84595910 (horizontal) when the machine is a horizontal knee type milling machine with a sideways spindle.
- 84595920 (vertical) when the machine is a vertical knee type milling machine with an upright spindle.
- 84595930 (universal) when the machine is a universal knee type milling machine, with a table that swivels to cut angles.
- 84595940 (ram type) when the machine is a knee type milling machine of the ram type, with the head carried on a ram.
- 84596910 (bed type, horizontal) when the machine is a bed type milling machine with a horizontal spindle and a table on a fixed bed.
- 84596920 (bed type, vertical) when the machine is a bed type milling machine with a vertical spindle and a table on a fixed bed.
A hand operated milling machine falls in the knee type subheading when its table rides on a knee that moves up and down, and in the other milling machines subheading when the table sits on a fixed bed. The spindle position, the swivelling table or the ram then decides the line. Numerically controlled milling machines have their own lines and are not covered here.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying milling machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a milling machine in India
- Get a GST invoice that states the machine type, model and spindle taper and lists the vice, arbors, draw bar, vertical head and coolant system supplied, so each accessory is on paper.
- Plan the floor before the order: these machines are heavy, so ask for the foundation and levelling drawing, the weight of each packed case, and the crane or forklift needed to place the machine.
- Put installation, levelling and a trial run at your site in the contract, with a test cut on a steel block and the accuracy checks of the Indian test standards for milling machines.
- Cutters, inserts, jig fixtures and clamps are usually for the buyer to arrange, so list what you need beside the machine and ask which holders and arbors fit the spindle.
- Book operator training on speed and feed charts, cutter changes, guards and the emergency stop, and train maintenance staff on the lubrication pump, slideway gibs and feed clutches.
- Agree spares and service in writing: keep spare gibs, feed nuts, clutch parts, belts and bearings on hand, and name a response time for a service visit.
Buying from Indian milling machine exporters
- For the European Union, the Machinery Regulation lists higher-risk machinery in its Annex I and names no milling machine for cold metal, but the machine still needs CE marking, an EU declaration of conformity and instructions for use. Ask how the design handles setting, cleaning and maintenance, and what operator access it assumes.
- For North America, ask whether the buyer's safety team works to a standard for manual milling, drilling and boring machines (see the compliance list). It covers manually controlled machines even when they have some automatic capability, so say in the order whether your model is manually controlled or runs programmed axes.
- Send the site voltage, number of phases and frequency in writing so that the main motor, the feed motor, the clutch coils and the coolant pump are built for them, and ask for the wiring diagram.
- State the spindle taper and arbor size your cutters and holders already use, because a different taper means adaptors, and confirm whether the vice, arbors, draw bar and coolant system are included.
- Request a packing list giving the size and weight of each case and how the table, saddle and knee are locked for sea transport, and a witnessed test cut with the maker's alignment chart before dispatch.
- Agree the Incoterm, who unloads and sets the machine, whether a Certificate of Origin is needed, and remote help and spares for the gearbox, feeds and clutches.
Where milling machines are made in India
Milling Machines are made in several Indian manufacturing clusters. diipl verifies makers wherever they are based.
Batala, Punjab
A 2011 Bureau of Energy Efficiency manual on the local foundry cluster says some 200 units in Batala manufacture lathe machines, milling/pantograph machines, fan bodies and pump bodies.
Standards and certifications for milling machines
Milling Machines for each market must meet that market's rules. diipl confirms the certifications your market needs before any meeting. Each requirement below links to its official source.

Milling Machine: frequently asked questions
Who makes milling machines in India?
This page does not name makers. Tell diipl what you need to cut: vertical, horizontal, universal or bed-type, the largest part and its weight, the spindle taper and any digital readout. diipl then looks for an Indian maker whose GSTIN is verified and whose works have been audited, confirms that it holds an Importer Exporter Code and can supply export documents, and sets up the first meeting. The audit includes a test cut on a steel block, with the milled faces checked for flatness and squareness.
Which table size, travel and table load should I ask for on a knee-type milling machine?
Start from your largest part and add the weight of the vice or fixture. One Indian knee-type range lists table lengths from 1350 to 1600 mm, longitudinal travel from 800 to 1200 mm, cross travel from 265 to 320 mm, vertical travel from 375 to 425 mm and safe table loads from 250 to 600 kg. Check that your longest cut and tallest part fit, with room for the vice.
Which standards or certifications apply to milling machines?
Accuracy is checked against the Indian test standards for milling machines: IS/ISO 1701 for machines with a table of variable height, and IS/ISO 1984 for manually controlled machines with a table of fixed height. Each has a horizontal-spindle part and a vertical-spindle part. For export to the European Union the machine needs CE marking, and ISO 16090-1 is the safety standard that names knee and column type milling machines.
What is the HSN code for milling machines?
The code for milling machines depends on whether the milling machine is a knee type or a bed type machine, and whether its spindle is horizontal, vertical, universal or carried on a ram: 84595910 when the machine is a horizontal knee type milling machine with a sideways spindle; 84595920 when the machine is a vertical knee type milling machine with an upright spindle; 84595930 when the machine is a universal knee type milling machine, with a table that swivels to cut angles; 84595940 when the machine is a knee type milling machine of the ram type, with the head carried on a ram; 84596910 when the machine is a bed type milling machine with a horizontal spindle and a table on a fixed bed; 84596920 when the machine is a bed type milling machine with a vertical spindle and a table on a fixed bed. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.
Can Indian manufacturers export milling machines?
Yes, if the machine suits the buyer's rules and power supply. Machine tool makers in one Indian cluster list export access in Europe, the Middle East, North America, South Asia and Africa. Importers of a knee-type milling machine usually ask for the CE marking and a declaration of conformity for the European Union, the safety standard they follow in North America, motors wound for their supply, case weights on the packing list, a witnessed test cut, and spare gearbox, feed and clutch parts.
Which industries buy milling machines?
Small job shops and contract machining units, tool rooms, maintenance and repair departments inside factories, gear and keyway cutting shops, and technical training workshops buy hand-operated milling machines. They suit quick set-ups on one-off and small-lot parts, because the operator needs no programme.
I make milling machines. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl sorts buyers by the machine they need: a tool room usually wants a knee-type machine, a shop with repeat heavy cuts a bed-type machine. It then researches which trades and regions need your range, runs outreach, and confirms that each buyer has a real job, a budget, a decision maker and a date before introducing you. Your name and contact details stay off every public page.
Vertical, horizontal or universal: which milling machine suits my parts?
Choose by the part. A vertical machine has an upright spindle. A horizontal machine has a hollow spindle with an arbor and suits heavy box-shaped parts with features on the side faces. A universal machine adds a table that swivels through a limited arc, so it can cut angled and helical work. For mixed work, ask about a ram-type machine: some ram-type machines can be used for both vertical and horizontal milling.
Knee-type or bed-type: which milling machine should a job shop pick?
A knee-type machine is the versatile one: the knee, saddle and table all move, and vices, dividing heads and other accessories widen its range. A bed-type machine carries the table directly on a heavy bed with the column behind it. The heavier build allows more spindle power and faster metal removal, but it is less versatile for small parts. Mixed one-off work suits knee-type; repeat heavy cuts suit bed-type.
How is the accuracy of a milling machine tested before delivery?
The ISO 1701 series sets geometric and machining tests, with tolerances, for general-purpose, normal-accuracy milling machines with a table of variable height, with reference to ISO 230-1. It checks accuracy only, not vibration, noise, speeds or feeds. Ask the maker for the test chart of the machine you will receive, and for a test cut on your own material.
Is a hand-operated milling machine still worth buying when numerically controlled machines are available?
For simple, one-off or repair work it often is. A trade magazine report on knee mills says shops find them faster and easier than a full numerically controlled machine for setting up and cutting simple parts, that tool rooms still use them, and that the open design gives the operator easy access. If your work is repeat production of identical parts, look at numerically controlled machines, covered on a separate page.
