What is a commercial drilling machine?
A drilling machine turns a drill and feeds it into a clamped workpiece to make a round hole. The spindle holds the drill in a chuck, a sleeve or a socket. A motor drives the spindle through belts or gears, and the operator or a power feed moves it down. On a pillar machine the head sits on a column above a table. On a radial machine an arm swings around a heavy column and the head slides along it, so a heavy part can stay clamped. Reaming, counter boring, spot facing and tapping use the same machine with other tools. This page covers manually controlled machines.
This page covers conventional, manually controlled drilling machines for factories and workshops; hand drills, home-use drills and machines that drill wells are not covered.
How diipl verifies drilling machine manufacturers
diipl checks every drilling machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For drilling machines, the capacity audit also covers:
- A drilling test on the factory floor at the rated hole size, in mild steel and in cast iron, with the spindle run at a low, a middle and a high speed and the feed engaged.
- The arm raised, swung and locked, and the head clamped at full reach, followed by a hole drilled to see whether the arm sags or the head moves under load.
- Alignment readings with a dial gauge and a test bar, following the test chart the maker quotes, such as the spindle square to the base plate and the run-out of the spindle.
- Machining of the base plate, the column and the arm guideways, with checks on the flatness of the base plate and the fit of the head on the arm.
- Every speed and feed lever engaged in turn under power, the tapping reverse tried, and the arm-lifting motor, emergency stop and guards tested.
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of drilling machines we cover
Indian drilling machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Radial drilling machine | Fabricators and machine shops that drill large plates, castings and welded frames |
| Heavy-duty radial drilling machine with powered clamping | Heavy engineering works, shipyards and structural steel shops drilling thick plate and large castings |
| Belt-driven pillar drilling machine | Workshops and maintenance shops drilling small and medium holes in steel parts |
| All-geared pillar drilling machine | Machine shops and fabrication workshops |
| Bench drilling machine | Workshops and assembly shops drilling small holes in light parts |
| Gang drilling machine | Factories making the same part in volume |
Radial drilling machine
A heavy column carries an arm that swings around it and can be raised and lowered, and the drill head slides along the arm. The part stays clamped on the base plate while the head moves to each hole, which suits very large work. Manually controlled: the operator sets speed and feed from fixed steps. One maker lists four radial models with capacities of 25, 40, 40 and 50 mm and column diameters of 130 to 250 mm.
Heavy-duty radial drilling machine with powered clamping
A radial machine for big holes in steel and cast iron, with the drill head, arm and sleeve clamped electro-hydraulically. One maker lists 50 mm in steel and 60 mm in cast iron, a drilling depth of 325 mm and a maximum drilling radius of 1500, 1790 and 2350 mm across three models, and also offers 80 mm and 100 mm machines. The operator sets speed and feed in steps. Choose it for heavy work.
Belt-driven pillar drilling machine
A head on a round vertical pillar, with a table below and a V-belt drive from the motor to the spindle. One maker lists a range from 12 to 32 mm in mild steel, with four or eight speeds, spindle travel of 75 to 165 mm and motors of half to one and a half horsepower. Manually controlled by the operator. Choose it for steady drilling of small and medium holes in parts that fit on the table.
All-geared pillar drilling machine
A floor-standing pillar drill with an all-geared head, so the spindle is driven through gears. One supplier's all-geared series lists drilling capacity from 30 to 50 mm, 12 spindle speeds, Morse taper 3 to 5, auto feed, and a coolant system and safety guard as standard. The operator sets speed and feed. Choose it for steady drilling of medium-sized holes where a stronger drive and built-in coolant matter.
Bench drilling machine
A small industrial drill on a bench or a floor stand, built for small holes in light jobs. A V-belt on cone pulleys sets the speed, and the operator feeds the drill by hand with a pinion on a rack, so the cut can be felt. A training text says it has no power feed, runs at 50 to 2000 rpm and takes drills up to 15.5 mm. Choose it for small holes in light parts.
Gang drilling machine
Two or more drilling units stand side by side on a common table. The part is moved from one head to the next, so each head can do a different operation. A trade-theory training text calls it highly suitable for mass production of the same component with multiple operations at the same point, and gives a head capacity of 15 to 32 mm. Manually controlled; choose it for repeat production, not one-off jobs.
What to specify when buying a drilling machine
A clear drilling machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Drilling capacity in mild steel and in cast iron | Makers state both. One maker lists 50 mm in steel and 60 mm in cast iron for its radial range and says 80 mm and 100 mm machines are also made. Fix your largest hole and the material first. |
| Arm reach, the distance from the column to the spindle centre | A longer arm reaches holes farther from the column. One maker lists a maximum drilling radius of 1500, 1790 and 2350 mm for three radial models. Measure your widest part before you choose. |
| Column diameter and base plate | Makers list column diameter next to arm reach. One maker lists column diameters of 130 to 250 mm for four radial models, rising with capacity. Ask for the base plate size and its T-slots as well. |
| Arm and head movements: plain, semi-universal or universal | Plain machines lift and swing the arm and slide the head. Semi-universal heads also swing about a horizontal axis. Universal arms also turn about one, for holes at any angle. Choose these extras only if you need angled holes. |
| Spindle taper and spindle travel | The Morse taper number decides which drills, sleeves and chucks fit. One maker's radial table runs from Morse taper 3 to 5 with spindle travel of 175 to 240 mm. Match the taper to the tooling you already own. |
| Spindle speeds and number of steps | Large holes need slow speeds and small holes need fast ones. One maker lists 12 steps from 40 to 1800 rpm and 32 steps from 10 to 1545 rpm across its radial models. Ask for the speed chart. |
| Feed steps and depth release | Feed sets how far the drill advances per turn. One maker lists 6 steps from 0.125 to 1.25 mm per revolution and 18 steps from 0.075 to 4 mm per revolution, with a precise depth release. |
| Drive: V-belt or gears | One maker lists belt-driven pillar drills with a V-belt and four or eight speeds, while all-geared heads drive the spindle through gears. Ask how speed is changed, how many steps there are and whether a pulley guard is fitted. |
| How the arm and head are clamped | On a radial machine the arm and the head must be clamped before drilling. One maker clamps the drill head, arm and sleeve electro-hydraulically. Ask which system is fitted and how the clamp is released. |
| Tapping with clutch and spindle reverse | Ask whether taps are engaged through a clutch and backed out by reversing the spindle. One maker lists this among the salient features of its radial range. |
| Motors, voltage and phases | A radial machine has one motor for the spindle and another to raise and lower the arm. Ask for the power of each, and give your site voltage, frequency and phases. |
| Weight, height and floor space | Weight decides the foundation, the lifting gear and the floor loading. One maker lists four radial models from 500 to 3000 kg and from 1600 to 2300 mm in height. |
| Chuck guard, emergency stop and spindle lock | Ask for a chuck guard with a micro-switch, a separate emergency stop and a spindle lock. One geared pillar drill model lists all three. |
| Accuracy test record for radial machines | ISO 2423:1982 covers radial machines with the arm adjustable in height. It sets geometrical and practical tests with permitted deviations and checks accuracy only; speeds and feeds are checked before. Ask for the record. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for drilling machines
The code for drilling machines depends on whether the machine is a bench or pillar drill, a radial drill, or a drill with several spindles or several heads. Choose the line that matches your machine:
- 84592910 (bench and pillar) when the machine is a bench or pillar drilling machine with one spindle, set and fed by the operator.
- 84592920 (pillar or columns, multi-spindle) when the machine is a pillar or column drilling machine that carries several spindles.
- 84592930 (radial) when the machine is a radial drilling machine, with a swinging arm and a drill head that slides along it.
- 84592950 (multi head drilling machines) when the machine is a multi head drilling machine, with several drilling heads.
A drilling machine for metal that is set and fed by hand or by power feed, with no numerical control, belongs in the other drilling machines subheading. The tariff then gives bench and pillar machines, radial machines, multi spindle pillar machines and multi head machines their own lines. A gang drilling machine, with several heads over one table, fits both the multi spindle pillar line and the multi head line, and no official text settles which, so confirm its line before you file.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying drilling machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a drilling machine in India
- Get a GST invoice that names the model, the spindle motor and the spindle taper and carries the maker's own GSTIN, and file the test record and the manual with it.
- Plan the site before delivery. A radial machine is tall and heavy, so ask for the maker's foundation drawing, check the floor and the lifting route, and allow for the height under the roof. Swing the arm clear of the base plate when a crane lifts a heavy part on.
- Put commissioning in the contract: levelling and bolting down, aligning the arm with the column, running every speed and feed under power, and a trial hole in your own material before you sign off.
- Agree tooling at the start: Morse taper sleeves, a drill chuck and a drift, the first set of drills, reamers and taps, and the work holding such as a drill vice, T-bolts and clamps, V-blocks and angle plates.
- Book operator training on choosing speed and feed for the drill size and material, clamping the work, using the coolant and backing out a tap. A part that is not clamped can spin with the drill and injure the operator.
- Fix the spares list and the service response in writing: belts on belt-driven machines, clutch and gear parts, the arm-lifting motor and clamping parts, switches and guards, and how fast an engineer can reach your plant.
Buying from Indian drilling machine exporters
- Ask the maker which safety standard the design follows. In the European Union, the standard written for drilling machines covers radial, pedestal and multi-spindle types, and the CE mark follows testing and a declaration of conformity from the maker. In North America, ask how the machine meets the safety standard for manual milling, drilling and boring machines that your site follows.
- Send your site voltage, frequency and number of phases. A radial machine has a spindle motor and a separate arm-lifting motor, and both must be wound for your supply.
- Confirm the spindle taper and the units on the dials and scales, metric or inch, so that your drills, sleeves and chucks fit and your operators can read the machine.
- Ask for a recorded drilling test in your own material, cast iron or mild steel, at the maker's works, together with the accuracy test record the maker follows, before the machine is packed.
- Ask how the machine is packed. The column, arm, head and base plate are heavy, so the arm and head should be clamped for transport and bare machined faces coated against rust on a sea voyage, with a packing list that names each part.
- Name the Incoterm in the contract, and check with your customs broker whether a Certificate of Origin is needed for this machine. Order a spares kit and video-call support with the machine, since an engineer's visit across a border takes time.
Where drilling machines are made in India
Drilling Machines are made in several Indian manufacturing clusters. diipl verifies makers wherever they are based.
Rajkot, Gujarat
Machine tool cluster whose products the district industrial profile lists as conventional, NC and CNC metal cutting machines, metal forming machines and machine tool spares.
Batala, Punjab
Foundry and machine tool cluster. A government energy study lists many units making lathe machines, milling and pantograph machines, fan bodies and pump bodies.

Drilling Machine: frequently asked questions
Who makes drilling machines in India?
diipl does not list maker names. Tell diipl the largest hole, the material, the part size and the shifts you run. diipl then picks a maker with a checked GSTIN and a works that has passed a capacity audit, confirms the Importer Exporter Code and the safety marking your market needs, and sets up the meeting. For this machine the audit includes a test hole at rated size and a check that the arm and head hold their position at full reach.
Which drilling capacity, arm reach and spindle taper should I ask for?
Start from your largest hole and the material. Radial makers quote capacity in mild steel and in cast iron: one lists 50 mm in steel and 60 mm in cast iron, with a maximum drilling radius of 1500 to 2350 mm across three models, and also makes 80 mm and 100 mm machines. Choose the arm reach from your widest part, then match the Morse taper to your drills and sleeves.
Which standards or certifications apply to drilling machines?
BIS lists test charts for checking the accuracy of drilling machines: IS 2199:1989 for radial machines, IS 2425:1982 for pillar type vertical machines and IS 2426:1985 for bench machines. It also lists IS 2243:1971 for drill chucks. These are test charts and a specification, so ask the maker for the machine's own test record. Overseas safety standards are set out under export compliance.
What is the HSN code for drilling machines?
The code for drilling machines depends on whether the machine is a bench or pillar drill, a radial drill, or a drill with several spindles or several heads: 84592910 when the machine is a bench or pillar drilling machine with one spindle, set and fed by the operator; 84592920 when the machine is a pillar or column drilling machine that carries several spindles; 84592930 when the machine is a radial drilling machine, with a swinging arm and a drill head that slides along it; 84592950 when the machine is a multi head drilling machine, with several drilling heads. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.
Can Indian manufacturers export drilling machines?
Yes, once the design meets the safety rules where the machine will run. In the European Union the CE mark can be applied only after testing the product and completing the conformity assessment procedure, and the maker draws up an EU declaration of conformity. Overseas buyers also look at the electrical supply, the spindle taper, the dial units, the packing and who gives remote support. The safety standards are listed under export compliance.
Which industries buy drilling machines?
Heavy users are mechanical engineering, shipbuilding and steel construction, where radial drilling machines make the assembly holes. They are also used in the construction sector for large structures such as bridges and tall buildings, and in making wind turbine and generator components. Smaller pillar and bench machines are chosen for lighter work, as the variants on this page explain.
I manufacture drilling machines. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl studies which fabricators, machine shops and engineering works need your type of machine, such as radial, pillar, bench or gang, and in which regions. It approaches them for you. Before any introduction it confirms that the need is real, money is set aside, the person speaking can sign and a purchase date exists. For drilling machines it also asks for the largest hole, the material and the arm reach, so you meet buyers your machine can serve. Maker names are never listed on the site.
Radial or pillar drilling machine: which one suits my work?
An upright or pillar machine is designed for medium-sized work. A radial machine is used mainly for medium to large and heavy work: its arm can be raised, swung and locked, and its head slides along the arm, so the operator can place the drill quickly over any point on the work. Choose pillar for small and medium parts, and radial when the part is heavy or its holes are spread over a wide area.
When does a gang drilling machine make more sense than separate drills?
A gang machine has a long common table and several drill heads side by side, each with its own motor. The part is shifted along the table from one head to the next, so drilling, reaming, counter boring and tapping follow each other, with each spindle set to a different tool. It is used for production work. For varied or one-off jobs, a radial or pillar machine is more flexible.
How heavy is a radial drilling machine and what does it need from the floor?
One maker lists four radial models from 500 kg to 3000 kg and from 1600 mm to 2300 mm in height. Weight decides the foundation, the lifting gear and the floor loading, and height decides whether the machine fits under the roof and the crane. Ask for the maker's foundation drawing and levelling method before you order, and check the floor and the lifting route.
Can a drilling machine also ream, bore and tap, and how is the work held?
Yes. Besides drilling, the same machine does reaming, boring, counter boring, countersinking, spot facing and tapping when the right tool is in the spindle. Tools fit in the spindle directly, through a sleeve or socket, in a chuck or in a tapping attachment. Never hold the work by hand. Use a drill vice, T-bolts and clamps, a step block, V-blocks, an angle plate or a drill jig, or the part can spin with the tool.
